Last Call for Gothic 1 Remake Collector's Editions

According to Google Analytics, our site’s average reader is somewhere in the 20 to 25 range. That means there’s a pretty good chance you weren’t even born when Piranha Bytes released their 2001 video game Gothic.

And that also means that you might not have even heard that Gothic is getting a ground-up remake. The Gothic 1 Remake is expected to hit consoles and PC sometime early next year, featuring a complete rebuild of the game’s graphics and controls, while staying true to it’s classic story and gameplay (with some caveats.)

The project has been in development for over five years now, and we’re right on the cusp of its release. While Gothic might not be super relevant today, it certainly was 15 years ago, and many of your favorite RPGs can trace their lineage back to it.

Like most major video game releases, the Gothic 1 Remake is getting a super-premium Collector’s Edition priced at $200. Buyers will receive a large wall mask for display, along with a leather wristband and notebook with their purchase.

It’s worth noting that THQ Nordic is strictly limiting the Gothic 1 Remake Collector’s Edition to 7,500 units. In the past few years we’ve seen too many collector’s editions be produced in excessive numbers. While that’s great for the publisher’s bottom line, it hurts resellers and fans looking to purchase a truly exclusive and rare product.

Gothic 1 Remake Collector’s Editions are currently available for purchase through THQ Nordic’s webstore and other video game retailers. The game still doesn’t have a hard release date so these are scheduled to ship on December 31, but we’re expecting that date to move (a little) further back once the game has an official launch date.

That’s the obvious question, isn’t it? We’ve seen a bit of a renaissance for video game collector’s editions in the last few years, so it’s no surprise to see resellers take an interest in any new AAA title shipping with premium editions before launch.

Obviously, there’s going to be a bit of speculation in the next few paragraphs. This will likely be a risky buy, so you might want to click somewhere else if you can’t stomach that.

Still here? Excellent. So, let’s start with the facts. Gothic is a 25 year old game, and it’s most recent mainline sequel was released in 2006. To put it simply, Gothic has not been relevant for a long, long time.

Yet THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive have put millions into producing a remake. This comes after years of successful reboots of decades-old titles like Indiana Jones and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. People are clearly hankering for a return to the Good Old Days of gaming.

The most tempting comparison to draw would be Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3. This game launched in 2023 to incredibly positive reviews, which was especially impressive considering it was a sequel to a game from 2000.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Collector’s Editions would go on to become one of the most profitable video game collector’s editions of all time, with resellers turning quadruple digit profits from their purchases.

It’s not exactly a fair comparison as BG3 was a completely new game while the Gothic 1 Remake is, well, a remake, but we think it’s important. We’re seeing a major shift in gaming back to the crunchy, heavily rules-based gaming of yore, and the Gothic 1 Remake is essentially that served up on a 4K, DLSS’ed platter.

That’s all a long way to say that maybe, maybe the Gothic 1 Remake will blow away reviewers and gamers to become the must play-title of the year. It’s happened before; it could happen again.

And that’s why the 7,500 limit on Gothic 1 Remake Collector’s Editions is compelling. If the game takes off and becomes a defining title for the decade, these Collector’s Editions will be considerably rarer than any other comparable title. It’s possible that resellers will be able to turn major profits after launch.

But it’s equally possible that they’ll sit in stock after the game’s release. As always, we strongly recommend getting familiar with a retailer’s return policy before making any purchase. Make sure you won’t be left holding the bag if these fail to resell.

That’s about the short and long of it. We had a feeling most resellers (and gamers) didn’t have this release on their radar, so we felt it our duty to inform and explain. We’ll let you make the final call, but let us remind you this is riskier than most items we cover.
