Registration for the Steam Frame opened Monday, and Valve closed it today and randomized every entry into two groups. Customers in the reservation queue got first dibs on the headsets Valve has ready for launch. They’ll start receiving purchase invites by email on September 18, though the order depends on where they landed in the queue.

Waitlist members didn’t get the same news. Their spot in line exceeds the number of headsets Valve is holding for launch, which means they’re looking at weeks or months before more stock frees up.

Now that people know which group they landed in, some reservation holders are cashing out instead of waiting. Early listings for Steam Frame reservations have started selling on eBay for around $2,000, all of them for the 2TB model so far.

Confirmed sales are still thin, but for a headset that hasn’t shipped a single unit yet, it’s a strong early signal that demand is outpacing what Valve can deliver at launch. For context, the 2TB model retails for $1,300 while the 256GB model is $1,059.

Out of roughly 6,500 community-submitted reports, around 2,000 indicate a reservation spot, with the rest split between waitlist and “pending” status. Rough as that ratio is, it points to about two people landing on the waitlist for every one who got a reservation. The Steam Frame subreddit is similarly filled with people complaining that they didn’t get a spot.

Expect more resale activity over the next few weeks. Demand should stay strong through the rest of the month as Valve works through purchase invites, and it could climb further once the reservation queue clears and waitlist members are staring down an open-ended wait.

There aren’t enough sales yet to call a ceiling on pricing, and that $2,000 figure could move in either direction as more units change hands. We also don’t have any solid data on the 256 GB headsets, so look out for confirmed sales in the coming days before making a listing.
