Tesla sold a limited number of Optimus figures for $40
They were reselling for five times that within a day
This is just the latest piece of Tesla merch to resell
Earlier this month, Tesla dropped an action figure based on their viral “Optimus” robots. With multiple points of articulation and close attention to detail, these were extremely popular with Tesla fans. In less than 24 hours, all of the figures were sold out. Now resellers are flipping them for more than five times what they retailed for.
Alright, by now we’re guessing everyone’s seen Tesla’s new robots. The Optimus “Gen 2” models went viral earlier last after making an appearance at Tesla’s We Robot event, serving drinks and taking selfies.
These are primarily operating through “teleoperation“, i.e. remote workers piloting the robots, rather than autonomous programming. It’s a fun display, but ultimately not that far removed from the chess-playing Mechanical Turk of the sixteenth century.
Tesla is open about this though, and has stated that full autonomy is a goal they’re moving toward. With thousands of self-driving Teslas operating on highways every day, we can’t rule anything out.
Anyways, Tesla recently produced a run of action figures based on the Tesla robots. These are 1:10 scale figures with 20 points of articulation. They can sit, stand, hold objects, and be your best friend.
These were shipped with a replica charging stand and miniature CyberHammer to complete the look. The packaging is distinctively Tesla: white and black plastic made to look more expensive than it actually is.
Tesla sold their Optimus Robot action figures for $40. It’s not clear how many were produced, but preorders opened on November 18 and they were sold out in under 24 hours.
We weren’t surprised. Tesla merch is enormously popular, and we’ve covered several recent releases like their Starship Torches, Cybertruck replicas, and even a Tesla Surfboard.
Tesla fans and Elon’s thousands of followers love snapping this stuff up, especially over retail. Right now, Tesla Bot action figures are reselling for more than $250, with plenty of recent sales crossing the $300 mark.
Pretty decent profits for anyone that managed to score early. Don’t forget, these were a comparatively easy buy. No special gimmicks or insider access necessary; all you had to do was show up and shell out.
