Key Points

  • The Collector’s Edition preordered for $140 on the Blizzard Gear Store, limited to three per household

  • Complete editions with the digital game code are reselling for $250 to $300

  • The digital content bundled with this edition is worth more than the physical items on the secondary market

Twenty years of expansions and Blizzard still found a way to make resellers do a double take. World of Warcraft: Midnight Collector’s Editions sold out ahead of the expansion’s March launch, and copies are now circulating on the secondary market. The interesting wrinkle here is that this edition has a split market unlike most collector’s sets, where customers are mainly interested in the digital contents rather than physical collectibles.

Midnight Collector's Edition Contents

The Midnight Collector’s Edition retailed for $139.99 on the Blizzard Gear Store. The physical contents are solid: a 208-page hardcover art book, a Midnight Collector’s Pin, and a replica of the Dark Heart with an LED component. Nice stuff for any WoW fan’s shelf.

But the real value here is the digital side. The box includes a World of Warcraft: Midnight Epic Edition game key, which unlocks the full expansion along with a suite of exclusive in-game content: housing items, two pets (Hopeflutter and Doomfeathers), two armor transmog sets (Lightstrider Raiment and Voidstrider Raiment), three mounts (Voidlight Surger, Lightwing Dragonhawk, and Voidwing Dragonhawk), and three days of early access plus 30 days of game time.

Warcraft Midnight Collector Edition Digital Content

That Epic Edition key alone retails for more than the physical bonuses are worth to a non-player. Typically, it’s the physical items in a Collector’s Edition that motivate buyers. This is an unusual case where players are actually seeking out the in-game bonuses included.

This is where it gets interesting for resellers. Copies sold with the digital code intact are moving for $250 to $300. Copies where the code has already been redeemed — so you’re left with just the physical items — are sitting around $50.

That’s a $200 spread based entirely on whether a previous owner already cracked open the envelope. Most collector’s editions work the other way: the physical items carry the premium and the digital content is a bonus. Here the digital content is load-bearing. Buyers on the secondary market are essentially paying for an Epic Edition key with some nice packaging included.

WoW Midnight Collector

What this means practically: if you bought one to play and redeemed your code, you’ve got a $50 box. If you bought one as a pure collectible and left the code untouched, you’re looking at a solid return on a $140 investment after eBay’s 13% fee — roughly $65 to $120 in profit depending on where you land in that $250 to $300 range.

Bottom Line

WoW collector’s editions have a reasonable long-term track record, particularly for expansions with strong reception. Midnight is the second chapter in the Worldsoul Saga, a multi-expansion arc Blizzard announced as a major storytelling initiative, so there’s genuine player investment in the story. That said, the secondary market value here is heavily dependent on the game key — once enough of those have been redeemed by buyers who just wanted to play, demand for sealed copies could soften.

Short term, prices should hold while the expansion is active and players are engaged. Long term, complete sealed copies will be the ones with any collector upside. The codeless physical sets are likely a dead end unless you’re selling to a dedicated WoW memorabilia collector.
