After launching in August, the video game Black Myth: Wukong has quickly racked up positive reviews from critics and players. While gamers have been excited for the game’s release for the last few years, it’s explosive launch was still a little surprising. As is the usual for popular video games, Black Myth: Wukong Collector’s Editions are going through the roof. Gamers who preordered early are now flipping their copies for three to four times what they bought them for.

Another day, another record-shattering video game release. This time last year it was Baldur’s Gate 3. After that, Starfield and Lies of P. Now a new game is hitting (digital) shelves, and generating quite a bit of talk.

Black Myth: Wukong is an ARPG developed and published by the Chinese company Game Science. It’s based on the classic novel “Journey to the West” and centered on the character Sun Wukong in his quest across a fantastically rendered China.

The game was first showcased in 2020, and the high graphical fidelity and scope of the project quickly attracted gamers’ attention. Over the last few years, Black Myth: Wukong has consistently ranked among the most anticipated upcoming releases.

So when it launched on August 20, the tremendous consumer response really wasn’t too surprising. According to Game Science, the game sold over 10 million units in three days. This makes it one of the fastest-selling releases of all time, beating out Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, and Helldivers 2.

To it’s credit, it seems like a pretty good game. Critics and players agree that it’s well made and visually stunning. Then again, if making a good game in 2024 was all you needed to succeed, we wouldn’t see acclaimed studios like Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shutting down every other week.

A considerable aspect behind Black Myth: Wukong’s success is its popularity in China. The game sparked controversy after a list of prohibited topics was leaked by influencers. Subjects like Covid-19, “feminist propoganda”, and CCP policies were blacklisted.

And Steam charts for Black Myth: Wukong show massive drop offs in player count when midnight rolls around in China. All of this is to say, Black Myth: Wukong is a very popular game, especially in China.

Black Myth Wukong Collector's Editions

Like any clever publisher, Game Science has maximized their profit by releasing a variety of premium editions for Black Myth: Wukong. Aside from standard editions that retailed for $60, Game Science also released a Digital Deluxe bundle, Deluxe Edition, and Collector’s Edition.

While the Standard and Digital Deluxe versions were available for PlayStation and PS5, the Deluxe and Collector’s Editions were only available for PC. These included several physical collectibles.

Black Myth: Wukong Deluxe Editions came with a digital copy of the game, SteelBook case, Wind Chime Necklace, Gold Sun Crow Pin, Thunderstone Ring, a headband, various stamps, and a silk scroll. They were $170.

But for real fans, only the Collector’s Editions will do. In addition to everything included in the Deluxe Version, Black Wukong: Collector’s Editions also included a highly detailed 15 inch statue of the Destined One.

Black Myth: Wukong Collector's Editions Resell

Only 1,000 copies of highly praised video game should be setting off your reseller spidey senses. While Wukong might have exceeded expectations, we still knew this would be a pretty major release when preorders first opened.

Right now, Black Myth: Wukong Collector’s Editions are reselling for more than $1,000. Most sales were presale listings made before the game’s release, but we’ve seen an explosion in the last few days of sellers flipping their copies closer to $2,000.

So while the $400 price tag might have seemed a little intimidating at first, these ended up being extremely lucrative. Better yet, resellers were able to make their money back in just a few weeks.
