The Odyssey's IMAX Popcorn Buckets are Already Reselling

The IMAX Film Camera Popcorn Bucket is modeled after the IMAX 15/65mm camera, the same camera Nolan has called the “Gold Standard” of filmmaking and used across The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and now The Odyssey.

The bucket features a working viewfinder that lights up to display a scene from The Odyssey in IMAX’s exclusive 1.43:1 expanded aspect ratio.

What makes this more interesting than typical movie tie-in merch is that it’s not really about The Odyssey specifically. It’s about IMAX as a medium and Nolan’s relationship with it. A Trojan horse or replica helmet would be obvious choices, but the camera Nolan has used across five major films has a longer shelf life. Nolan fans, film buffs, and IMAX enthusiasts all have reasons to want this one.

The Odyssey is generating enormous hype on its own. It’s the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX cameras, a milestone Nolan has been working toward since The Dark Knight. The film releases July 17, and 70mm IMAX tickets have been reselling for hundreds of dollars. The bucket dropped alongside ticket sales on June 4 and sold out quickly.

Early eBay listings are showing the bucket going for up to $200, with strong enough demand that prices in the $150 range appear sustainable for the near term. With the film still six weeks out and shipping not starting until July 3, many buyers haven’t even received their orders yet, which means the market is still in early price discovery.

This is one of the better popcorn bucket flips in recent memory. At $50 retail and with multiples turning at $150 to $200, the math is straightforward. After eBay’s roughly 13% fee structure, a $175 sale nets around $152, putting profit comfortably north of $100 per unit. A $200 sale clears about $174 after fees, or roughly $124 profit.

The major risk here is IMAX restocking aggressively, which could soften prices in the short term. Additional popcorn buckets tied to the film (theaters typically release several versions) could also spread collector attention across multiple items and dilute demand for this one. Keep an eye out for any theater-exclusive versions closer to release.

A restock is certainly plausible. With more than a month remaining before July 17, there’s a real window for IMAX to drop more inventory. If that happens, expect a temporary dip in eBay prices, likely back toward $150 or so.

In-theater availability at IMAX locations on release day is possible but not something to count on as a sourcing strategy.

This is final sale only with no refunds from IMAX, so anyone holding stock that doesn’t move is stuck with it. That said, the demand picture looks strong. The bucket has a collectibility angle that extends beyond a single film and launched during one of the most hyped theatrical releases of the year.

If a restock drops, it’s an easy flip. For sellers already holding one, current prices are favorable and early, with more runway as the release date approaches.
