Update: Ahead of Trump’s announced tariffs, Nintendo has indefinitely delayed preorders for the Switch 2. The launch date is unaffected.

From rumors to reality: the Nintendo Switch 2 finally has a release date. We got a lot of new information during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, and now resellers are compiling the data and sketching out a game plan. The original Switch was one of the most lucrative flips in recent memory, so it’s no surprise to see its successor in the crosshairs once again. However, it seems like Nintendo is already taking steps to push back against resellers. Let’s get into it.

April Nintendo Direct: Switch 2 Details

2025 is looking like yet another excellent year for gaming. Nintendo kicked off April with an hour long Direct, featuring teaser trailers of new games and an extensive showcase of their latest console.

The imaginatively-named Switch 2 will be releasing in June 2025, and gamers were finally able to get concrete information of pricing and preorder info after months of speculation.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing

The Switch 2 will cost $450 when it releases on June 5, alongside a Mario Kart World bundle for $500. Dollar for dollar, this makes it the most Nintendo console ever produced, and the most expensive in 30 years even after adjusting for inflation.

Additionally, Nintendo Switch 2 games are being priced at $80 and $90. This comes after months of pushback from gamers upset about the new standard of $70 AAA games, and is overall not being received very well.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 (theoretically) launching later this year, gamers have been anticipating a new standard in video game prices. In the end, it seems like Nintendo has started the movement, and not Rockstar.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorder Info

Along with price info and technical specs, Nintendo also gave some transparency into the preorder process for the Switch 2.

There are two main options for preorders: through the My Nintendo Store, and through other retailers.

You can request a preorder through My Nintendo right now, but they have some requirements you’ll need to meet first. To be eligible, you need to have a Nintendo account registered in the US or Canada with at least 12 months of online membership, and at least 50 hours of gameplay logged on the Switch prior to April 2, 2025.

Additionally, account holders must be at least 18 and opted in to share gameplay data with Nintendo. If you meet these eligibility requirements, you have until April 9 to register for the first batch of preorders. Nintendo expects to start sending out purchase invitations in May on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you don’t have an eligible Nintendo account, you can still preorder through Walmart and BestBuy starting on April 9. It’s likely Amazon and Target will have some stock available as we get closer to the launch date.

Nintendo announced on Friday that they will be indefinitely delaying preorders for the Switch 2 because of Trump’s tariffs. We have no further details at this time, although Nintendo has assured that the price and launch date of the Switch 2 will be unaffected.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Resell?

Time for the billion dollar question: will scalpers take control of this launch like they did in 2017? If you were on the scene at the time, you might remember just how profitable the original Switch was (and how hard it was to find at a retailer.)

On one hand, it does seem like Nintendo has learned some lessons in the past few years. The company’s efforts to restrict official preorders to accounts with established playtime seems like an obvious attempt to cut down on scalping.

Additionally, we’ve heard unconfirmed reports that Nintendo has been stockpiling units in the US ahead of potential tariffs, indicating that they’re doing as much as they can to get a Switch 2 into the hands of everyone who wants one.

And the public perception of the Switch 2 has become remarkably mixed. The significant bump in price for both the console and its games has generated a lot of hate on social media. Will that be enough to cut into demand?

Probably not! After all, it’s the long-awaited successor to Nintendo’s biggest console. People have speculating and clamoring for the Switch 2 since 2017. They might be complaining today but expect to see them lining up in June.

Based on yesterday’s Direct and the current climate, we’re expecting Nintendo Switch 2 consoles to sell out quickly. We don’t know how much stock Nintendo is allocating for preorders versus general sale or even how much they’re planning to sell through My Nintendo.

They might be taking steps to avoid it, it might not be as lucrative as 2017, and it might not last as long, but we’re still expecting a (profitable) shitshow in June.

Our advice? If you’re eligible to register for a preorder through My Nintendo, do it right now. The window will only be open until April 9, and invitations will be sent out first-come, first-serve. Additionally, we recommend making preorders for the console through as many retailers as your credit card will allow.

And now all that’s left is to wait. Gamers have been anticipating the Switch 2 for years; you can hold out for a couple more months.
