Key Points

  • Swatch closed its Mission to the Moon 1969 ESTA with roughly 1.2 million applications for 1,969 watches

  • The brand has now published the correct quiz answers so applicants can check their results

  • Winners get notified starting Monday, July 27 and then have 48 hours to complete their purchase

Did you turn your ESTA in before the application period closed? The grading is in. Applicants who filled out an ESTA for a shot at the coveted Mission to the Moon 1969 can now see exactly which questions they nailed and which ones sent them down a rabbit hole. Before the golden emails start landing, here’s what the answer key reveals, and why one question in particular has fans arguing with the brand itself.

Mission to the Moon 1969 ESTA

Swatch has posted the official ESTA answer key, letting everyone who applied for a shot at the Mission to the Moon 1969 go back and check their work. With 1.2 million completed applications chasing just 1,969 numbered pieces, that works out to roughly 600 hopefuls per watch, making this easily the toughest odds we’ve covered on a MoonSwatch drop.

Getting every factual question right isn’t a golden ticket either. Swatch’s internal jury still has to review the open-ended essay answers before picking the 1,969 winners.

MoonSwatch 1969 ESTA Reseller Scalper Question

Hmm…

The quiz itself leaned hard into trivia most casual fans wouldn’t know off the top of their head: beat time, historical currency conversions, and details buried deep in Swatch’s press materials. If you filled it out on vibes alone, don’t expect a callback.

Wait, How Many Rolling Planets?

Question 26 asking how many “Rolling Planets” Swatch has worldwide became the most argued-over prompt in the entire ESTA. Swatch’s own MoonSwatch tour pages describe 11 rolling planets, one for each color in the original Bioceramic collection. The quiz, though, only gave applicants two choices: 9 or 28. Because Swatch’s collection includes the Sun and Moon, test takers assumed the 11 rolling planets minus the two non-planet celestial bodies would come out to 9. Instead, 28 ended up being the correct answer.

MoonSwatch 1969 ESTA Rolling Planets Question

One theory we’ve seen proposed on Reddit is that “28 represents the actual physical fleet. Swatch deployed a global fleet of 28 “Rolling Planets” cars/trucks around the world as mobile pop-up stores for the MoonSwatch tour”. Another take argues that since Swatch’s US and EU materials already account for 11 planets, 9 can be ruled out on its face, with the remaining question being how many more exist across markets like Asia that weren’t covered in the public tour materials.

Neither explanation is confirmed by Swatch, and we’re not going to pretend we know which answer the jury is grading as correct. No one outside Swatch knows for sure why they selected 28 as the correct answer. Whether or not it’s a deviously constructed trick question or just a poorly written one is up for endless internet debate.

Swatch is Changing ESTA Answers

One thing worth noting before you panic over a wrong answer: Swatch has already amended at least one entry on the answer key. The Beat Time question originally accepted only 886.7 as correct, an odd call given that Beat Time is officially expressed in whole numbers.

MoonSwatch 1969 ESTA Beat Time Question

Swatch has since updated the accepted answers to include 886.7, 886, and 887. If the brand is willing to walk back a technical answer like that, it’s possible that other contested questions, Rolling Planets included, could see similar revisions before Monday.

Bottom Line

If you’re one of the 1,969 selected, Swatch starts sending notifications Monday, July 27. From there you get 48 hours to complete the purchase online before the slot passes to someone else, and you’ll still need to show up in person with matching ID to collect the watch from the store you picked during the application.

With over a million entries chasing under two thousand watches, most applicants already know they’re not getting the golden email. If you got every factual answer right as currently graded and still don’t hear back Monday, the essay questions were probably the deciding factor, not your grasp of Swatch trivia. And if you got marked wrong on a contested question like Rolling Planets, it may be worth watching for updates before writing off your chances entirely.

A Word of Warning

In the very unlikely event that your ESTA is accepted and Swatch offers you the chance to buy a MoonSwatch Mission to the Moon 1969, we encourage you to think through your next moves carefully. Yes, this watch is worth more than its weight in gold. Yes, only a handful have been made compared to the massive demand. Yes, you could flip it for a shitload of money.

However, to even have a chance at buying one you had to submit your personally identifying information to Swatch, and the watch you buy will be linked to your identity. If you resell your MoonSwatch 1969 within 12 months of receiving it and Swatch finds out, you will probably be permanently blacklisted from buying future limited edition Swatch releases. Considering the Swatch Group also includes brands like OMEGA, Hamilton, Blancpain, and more, that ban may also encompass more than just Swatch.

If you’re just a flipper and you don’t care about buying fancy watches, great, good for you. If you’re a collector with genuine appreciation for Swatch’s products or watches from their affiliates, be very careful with this. Discretion is the better part of valor and all that. Of course, we’ll leave that decision up to you.
