Key Points

  • 2025 may be the last year of US penny production

  • Collectors are rushing to get 2025 pennies

  • They are reselling for 50 cents to a dollar

Earlier this month, Trump ordered the US Mint to cease further production of the penny, citing excessive costs compared their relative value. While it’s still early, the announcement has made waves among coin collectors. Since we’re just a few months into 2025, only a limited number of the coins have made their way out of the mint and into circulation. These 2025 pennies are suddenly looking very collectable, and resellers are selling them for up 100 times their face value. Let’s get into it.

Trump Discontinues Penny Production

How much is a penny really worth? If you look at the coin, one cent. If you ask the mint, they’ll tell you it costs upwards of three cents to make one. And if you check eBay, you’ll see resellers asking for up to a dollar per coin. What’s going on?

As part of his administration’s cost-cutting efforts, President Trump announced earlier this month that he had directed to the mint to stop producing the penny. The coin has been unprofitable for over twenty years now, so some are seeing the call as long overdue.

There are a number of interesting ramifications to discontinuing the penny that we don’t have the time or knowledge to discuss. If you’re interested, check out this breakdown from the New York Times.

It’s worth noting that Trump does not need congressional approval to discontinue the penny; his Treasury Secretary could simply stop ordering the coin for 2025 and that would be that.

This announcement has caught considerable attention from coin collectors. 2025 might mark the last year of newly minted US pennies, and there aren’t that many in circulation because we’re so early in the year.

2025 Pennies Resell for a Profit

The result? A run on pennies. Collectors and resellers have been fighting over the limited supply of one cent coins, and you can see how things are going on eBay.

Right now, the 2025 penny is reselling for anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar. Resellers are usually listing them as 50-coin rolls, so the sales we see are usually for around $50 at a time.

2025 Penny for Sale Trump Shutdown

$50 for 50 cents is a ridiculously profitable opportunity, and this is all before any sort of grading or certification process. Considering the low upfront cost and the fact these are just normal currency, this is an absolutely zero risk flip that every reseller should be taking advantage of.

It’s hard to say exactly how many 2025 pennies are in circulation. The US Mint produced over 3 billion of them in 2024, so assuming they’ve kept the same pace there may be anywhere from 400 million to a billion 2025 pennies ready to go.

How to Get 2025 Pennies

But it’s not like everyone has a stack of fresh pennies laying around, ready to sell. If you went fishing through your loose change you’re more likely to find pennies from the 50s and 60s than this year.

The best way to find 2025 pennies is directly through a bank. You can request them to sell you the coins they have on hand, and you may be able to have them put in an order to the Federal Reserve on your behalf.

You’ll probably want to go to multiple locations, and it would be ideal to have an account with the bank already (but it’s not necessary).

Because of the tremendous profit potential and low risk, we’re recommending all of our readers to take advantage of this flip. Collectors are already paying to stock up on these coins, so why not drive to a few banks and score hundreds, even thousands of dollars in profit for literal pennies invested?

And even in a worst case scenario where Trump reverses the shutdown or the market becomes saturated, the coins will still be worth exactly what you paid for them. Take them back to the bank, spend them, waste some retail worker’s time purchasing an Xbox with them; it doesn’t matter. It’s money after all.
