Target Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Adventure Hip Pack

This hip pack style bag was given out as a free promotional item with copies of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold at Target stores on release day. Stock was limited at each location.

The latest entry in The Legend of Zelda video game series is here. May 12 marked the global release of Tears of the Kingdom, which is a heavily remixed version of 2016’s smash hit Breath of the Wild. Reviews for the game are glowing, and it looks like TotK is poised to be one of the most popular games of the decade. Hype around the game is so strong that the various preorder bonuses are already reselling. Today, we’ll be comparing the TotK pre order bonuses from Gamestop, Target, and Walmart, and ranking them based on their resell value.

What are the TotK pre order bonuses?

As is the trend in modern gaming, buyers are increasingly encouraged to put their money down early in the form of a preorder. Games publishers like it, game stores love it, and consumers continue to do it. When multiple retailers are competing over a gamer’s business, they will offer an incentive for the buyer to place their preorder with them.

In the case of Tears of the Kingdom, there are several different preorder bonuses worth talking about. We’ll be looking at the offerings from Gamestop, Target, and Walmart, all of which were unique. None of these preorder bonuses could be purchased from other stores, or bought separately; they were exclusively available as a free bundle with the purchase of a game.

Tears of the Kingdom Pre Order Bonus Ranked

Preordering TotK with Gamestop came with a small wooden plaque, engraved with symbols from the game. Gamers who bought the game at Target would receive a TotK hip pack, and Walmart TotK preorders included a wall scroll with the Master Sword emblazoned on it.

Based on the resell values of the various TotK pre order bonuses, we’ve found that the Target hip pack is the least profitable option, while the Walmart wall scrolls have the highest reselling potential. Let’s look at them in detail.

Tears of the Kingdom Target Hip Pack

For starters, this is a fanny pack. Apparently the marketers involved thought that term was a bit lame for today’s modern gamer, but come on, let’s call a spade a spade.

Technically, Target doesn’t do preorders. That said, every purchase of TotK through Target came with this Legend of Zelda themed hip pack. There’s not much more to be said about it other than what you see here; it’s brown, boring, but the perfect size to stash some snacks or games while out on the town.

Tears of the Kingdom Pre order Target Hip Pack

The average resell price for one these hip packs is around $35. Ironically, it’s the most functional item out of all the preorder bonuses, but that is not translating to a very high resell price. Still, $35 for a free item isn’t bad at all.

Total resell value: $30-$40

Tears of the Kingdom Gamestop Wooden Plaque

This bonus is slightly controversial. Some fans are utterly confused by it, others think it’s neat. It tends to resell pretty well, with many listings selling at or above $50.

Gamestop also included a second preorder bonus for TotK, apparently without advertising it. Gamers who bought their copy of Tears of the Kingdom through Gamestop would also receive a special arm sleeve, based on the appearance of Link’s arm in the game.

Tears of the Kingdom Pre Order Bonus Gamestop Wood Plaque

These flip for around $20, and it also seems like they were not available everywhere. Getting both a sleeve and a wooden plaque and reselling them can pay for the cost of the game.

Total resell value: $50-$70 if you got both

Tears of the Kingdom Walmart Wall Scroll

Here’s where things get a little interesting. Preordering Tears of the Kingdom through Walmart had by far the highest potential resell value, but it depends on how fast you were. In April, Walmart opened their preorders for Tears of the Kingdom, with an included preorder bonus of a decorative wall scroll featuring the Master Sword.

The first 5,000 people who placed an order for these scrolls would receive a unique golden scroll. The standard preorder bonus scroll was black. It’s unclear how long it took for these special scrolls to sell out, but a Reddit thread of Walmart buyers shows some confusion about which they would receive.

Some buyers also reported getting a discount by contacting customer service after a placing a TotK preorder through Walmart. Getting $30 knocked off the price of the game while still receiving a wall scroll makes this a pretty lucrative option.

Tears of the Kingdom Pre Order Bonus Walmart Scroll

Currently, the gold wall scroll from Walmart resells for around $100, while the black version goes for around $60. Depending on what scroll came with your order and a potential discount, preordering TotK through Walmart could actually end up being profitable overall.

Total resell value: $50-$120, possible $30 discount

Reselling the TotK Collector's Edition

Remember, all of these bonuses came bundled for free with the standard edition of the game. Aside from the gold scroll from Walmart, these were not limited at all, and easily obtainable.

We’ll be putting our thoughts out on the Tears of the Kingdom Collector’s Editions tomorrow. While video game collector’s editions tend to be a bit risky, we’re fairly confident in the long term value of this one.

If you haven’t already, make sure you check out our article on Breath of the Wild’s Collector’s Edition from 2016. Those were some of the most profitable items to resell released in recent years, and TotK may be about to repeat their success.
