In case you missed it, Sonic 3 hit theaters last month. With Keanu Reeves playing Shadow, the movie has been extremely popular with fans. Of course, merchandisers have been hard at work pre and post-launch, and one worth paying attention to is Build-a-Bear Workshop. A small number of Shadow Build-a-Bear plushes were sold online and in stores in December, and have become highly collectable. We’ve seen these plushes flip for over ten times their original retail prices, so it’s worth a visit or call to your local Build-a-Bear to see if any are still left.

Let’s get edgy. 24 years ago, the world was introduced to Shadow the Hedgehog. Dark, brooding, and the coolest thing in the world if you’re ten years old. Now a new generation is learning about the character.

Sonic 3 debuted in theaters last month, and that means new toys. Everyone knows the real money in kids’ media comes from a factory in Shenzhen.

What we’re looking at today is the Sonic 3 collection at Build-a-Bear Workshop, specifically their Shadow plushes. These were sold for $34 just ahead of the movie’s premiere, alongside other characters.

But demand was highest for the Shadow plushes, and they did not have enough stock to keep up. The available Shadow Build-a-Bear plushes sold out very quickly, and they have only periodically restocked.

As of this publication, the listing for these on Build-a-Bear’s website has been scrubbed, so it’s unclear what their plans are for the plush. A major restock is likely, but it may take months to arrive.

To buy a Shadow plush from Build-a-Bear Workshop, you’ll need to put in a little effort. Call your local stores and ask if they still have any in stock, and ask a worker to check next time your at the mall. Trust us, this is not something you want to skip on.

And that’s because they are reselling for prices you need to see to believe. We’ve been tracking tons of eBay sales since these plushes sold out from Build-a-Bear in December.

Right now, a Shadow Build-a-Bear plush is reselling for $200 to $400 at a time. Yes, hundreds of dollars are changing hands over a little bundle of Chinese polyester. We’re not complaining.

If that kind of profit is appealing to you, then get in on this flip. Make some calls, drive around a little, and cross your fingers. Chances are you’ll get unlucky, but finding just one of these plushes will make it worth your time.

Keep an eye on Build-a-Bear’s socials and collector communities for word on a restock. As we said, these will probably be returning to stores, we just don’t when.
