The 12” version of Squishmallows’ 500th character, Jack the Black Cat. Released exclusively online as a limited edition of 1000.
Squishmallows have been rapidly gaining fans for years now. Collectors of the toys love to buy up the cuddly plushies, and are willing to pay some pretty remarkable prices to have one. In 2020, Squishmallow put out a limited release of 16″ Jack the Black Cat Squishmallows limited to just 500. After these sold out, a second production of 12″ Squishmallows was unveiled. Both runs of the Jack the Black Cat Squishmallows sold out extremely fast, and are now highly collectible.
Currently, the Jack the Black Cat Squishmallow is both the rarest and most expensive Squishmallow produced. It was first unveiled in September 2020. Squishmallows were becoming more and more popular at this time, so Jack was a sort of celebration of the brand’s success.
As Jack was the 500th Squishmallow character, only 500 would be produced. This initial run of Jack the Black Cat Squishmallows was in the 16″ size, for $30.
Because of the extremely limited production, these Squishmallows sold out very fast. It took less than an hour for the stock to sell, with enough site traffic that Squishmallow’s page for Jack the Black Cat crashed and was unavailable for much of the day.
A few days later, Squishmallow followed up with an announcement: Jack the Black Cat would return in a different size, and greater production.
On September 4th, Squishmallow confirmed collectors would get another shot at Jack. While the rarity of the original 16″ size would remain, a new production of 1,000 12″ Jack the Black Cat Squishmallows was on its way.
Almost two months later, the release date for the new 12″ Squishmallow Jack the Black Cat was announced for November 1st 2020.
The sale for the Series 2 version of Jack the Black Cat went more or less the same as the first. Fans were upset they missed out, and disappointed that stock sold out so fast.
Despite these complaints, it does seem like the second release of the Jack the Black Cat was a bit fairer than the first. While the Squishmallow site experienced heavy traffic and service interruptions, this seemed to delay the sellout of Jack the Black Cat plushies for a time. Users reported being able to sporadically log in and make a purchase throughout the day.
After selling out both the 12″ and 16″ Squishmallow Jack the Black Cat plushies, they began to resell. Initial sales tended to hover around the $200 mark, as resellers offloaded their plushies to Squishmallow collectors who missed the drop.
Over time, the average sale price began to creep up. The Squishmallow fandom continued to grow, and the Jack the Black Cat Squishmallow gained recognition as the single rarest plushie produced to date. While the 16″ was the most desirable, the 12″ Squishmallow Jack the Black Cat was still very popular.
By 2023, both sizes of the plushie are still extremely rare. Owning one is a badge of serious dedication to Squishmallow collecting, and the price has risen to meet the demand. The 16″ Jack the Black Cat Squishmallow resells for more than $1,000 quite regularly.
Prices for the 12″ design are a bit lower, but not by much. Squishmallows Jack the Black Cat 12″ plush usually sells for $900, with a few sales at or above $1,000.
The success of the Jack the Black Cat Squishmallow is a testament to the growth of the Squishmallow fandom. Collectors are very serious about these, and willing to shell out major cash for a plushie. With the extremely limited production of this series of Squishmallows, it was almost a guarantee they’d sell out. After three years of growth, they’ve become the holy grail for a Squishmallow collector, so don’t expect the price of a Jack the Black Cat Squishmallow to come down any time soon.
