Limited Edition Hefty Birthday Cake Trash Bags Sell Out

You know, we’ve covered a lot of weird products in the last few years, and nothing really phases us anymore. Mustard Skittles? Sure, why not. Vinyl records filled with actual blood? That’s metal. Fake plastic flowers reselling for hundreds of dollars? Just another day.

So believe us when we say that collectable, limited edition and profitable garbage bags isn’t actually that wild of a concept. In fact, we covered a line of pumpkin spice bags produced in 2023 that went on to resell.

For Hefty’s 60th anniversary, the brand has unveiled a line of birthday cake flavored scented garbage bags. These were only available for a limited time through Hefty’s website on May 27.

The bags themselves were just 60 cents, and each pack contained 20 bags. It might be economical, but is it a good idea? If you’re actually a big fan of the smell of birthday cake, do you really want to mix it with rotting food and stinky trash odors?

Of course, we’ll always let people make their own poor decisions. Alongside the bags, Hefty also teamed with the Chicago Cubs for an exclusive birthday bash at Wrigley Field. The first 5,000 fans that entered through the Budweiser Bleacher gate at yesterday’s game would receive Hefty 60th Birthday bucket hats.

So, gross factor aside, were these bags a good flip? It’s still very early and we’ve yet to see any confirmed sales, but we are seeing a few resellers listing their bags for around $100.

We will say that the quick sell out time bodes pretty well for these bags. We’re guessing Hefty didn’t produce very many, and the few that were available were snatched up by… collectors?

If you want a comparison, our best bet is the pumpkin spice trash bags we mentioned before. These dropped in August 2023, with $5 packs reselling for up to $30 with pretty good volume.

These were more widely available than the birthday cake bags as Hefty sold them in stores for a limited time. Then again, pumpkin spice is a more widely appreciated scent than birthday cake, and it coincided perfectly with the start of fall.

Who knows what the Hefty birthday cake trash bags will resell for. We’ll be keeping our eyes on them in the next few days and monitor for a possible restock.
