Corn sugar and condiments intertwine in the new mustard flavored Skittles
Packs are not sold in stores, but will be given away free
Three select locations or a national sweepstakes are the only way to score a bag
Ready for a truly weird collaboration? Skittles has an announced an upcoming limited-time flavor coming to American consumers in August. Yellow, tangy, and just a bit spicy, Mustard Skittles are the unholy amalgamation of French’s mustard and the iconic candy. Whether the thought fills your heart with excitement or fear, one thing is for sure: these Skittles are something special. And while it’s still early, some resellers are already eyeing them up as a potential source of profit. Let’s take a look.
Yes, you read that right. While we can’t imagine anybody was actually writing up Mars and asking for this flavor, it’s a real thing. In a few days time, we’ll be living in a post-Mustard Skittles world, for all the good and evil that might entail.
The flavor (marketing stunt) was announced on July 25, to a wide variety of reactions. We’re sure that there are some depraved folks out there salivating already, but the question on most of our mind is just what these candies will taste like. Spicy dijon? Mostly vinegar? Or more of a honey mustard type flavor?
Here’s a clip of a few newsreaders getting an early taste:
Yum! In any case, the upcoming flavor is already making a stir on social media. People are eager to offer up their opinions on the candy, most of which are some variation of “what the hell is wrong with you”. We have to imagine this kind of reaction is exactly what the companies involved had hoped for.
Are you interested in trying a pack? Mark your calendars, because these Skittles are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and won’t be around forever.
Unfortunately for the freaks, mustard-flavored Skittles will not be available at stores any time in the near future. Interested parties will need to either head out to a select location or get a little lucky to score a pack.
There are two ways to get a pack of Mustard Skittles. The first is to make your way to one of three possible locations where Skittles’ “Mustard Mobile” will be stopping this summer. Three lucky cities, three short days. Skittles has confirmed stops in the following locations:
Is your city on the list? If so, we recommend making a stop at one of these locations to pick up a a bag of tangy treats. You’ll also have the opportunity to win some mustard-themed swag, whatever that means.
For the rest of us, it’s possible to win a bag of Mustard Skittles and have them shipped directly to your home. Skittles and French are running a limited sweepstakes for these, and 700 lucky folks will be getting a very special package in the mail soon.
You can enter the sweepstakes on French’s site here.
Now here’s the big question for many of us. If you can resist the temptation to tear into your bag, it’s possible that reselling a pack of Mustard Skittles could be quite a profitable endeavor.
Remember, these candies will not be sold in stores. They are exclusively available through Skittles Mustard Mobile or the limited number of packs given out from the sweepstakes. With only 700 being distributed through the latter method, that’s not nearly enough Mustard Skittles to go around.
You can probably see where this is going. Limited-time product, limited production, limited distribution. When these factors mix with the kind of heightened demand we’re already seeing, it’s a recipe for some truly stupid prices on eBay.
We’ve seen it in the past. In our articles on Maple Syrup Pepsi and the TRUFF X Hidden Valley Ranch collaboration, we covered how these kinds of limited food and drink offerings can become highly collectable.
Whether folks will be buying them to eat, put on a shelf, or use as a torture method, we don’t really care. All we’re interested in are what they’re willing to pay, and history has shown that it won’t be a modest amount. We’ll need to wait until the bags start being listed on eBay for prices to shake out, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they sell for $50, or even $100 plus.
That’s it for now. If the Mustard Mobile is headed to your city, stop by and snag a pack while you can, and make sure that put your name in the sweepstakes. While the idea of Mustard Skittles might not be terribly appetizing, the potential profit sure is.
