A celebrity's autograph always spikes in value after their death

Diane Keaton Signed Books Rise in Value after her death

Key Points

  • Signed copies originally retailed between $50 and $65 from various retailers, and were still available this week

  • Current resale prices average around $100 on eBay for standard signed copies

  • Rare copies with hand-drawn doodles or personalizations have sold for up to $500

The signed copies of Diane Keaton’s “Fashion First” that retailers quietly picked up last week are now flipping for serious money on the secondary market. Following Keaton’s death on October 11, these signed books sold out fast and are currently reselling for around $100, with special copies featuring hand-drawn doodles reaching up to $500.

"Fashion First" Autographed Editions

Published by Rizzoli in September 2024, “Fashion First” is a 304-page look at Keaton’s style evolution, from childhood photos in her mother’s homemade outfits to her iconic Annie Hall menswear looks. With a foreword by Ralph Lauren and contributions from Sarah Jessica Parker, Kris Jenner, and Candice Bergen, the book chronicles seven decades of Hollywood’s most distinctive dresser.

Retailers like Books-A-Million, Book Passage, and Premiere Collectibles offered limited signed editions with Keaton’s autograph on a bookplate inside. At retail, these ran between $50 and $65. Standard unsigned copies sold for $40 to $55.

Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton died earlier last weekend at 79, with many sources describing her death as “unexpected“. Known for pioneering androgynous fashion and making menswear acceptable for women decades before it became mainstream, Keaton remained a style icon until the end. Her signature look of turtlenecks, wide-brimmed hats, oversized belts, and tailored suits influenced multiple generations.

Diane Keaton's Signed Books Resell

Unlike unsigned copies which still sell for retail price or below, the signed editions have established clear value in the collectibles market. This follows the pattern we saw with other recently deceased celebrities where authenticated signatures immediately appreciate.

Standard signed copies are moving consistently on eBay in the $80 to $120 range. Sellers who picked these up at retail for $50 to $65 are seeing $30 to $50 profit per copy after eBay’s 13% fees. More importantly, demand remains steady rather than spiking and crashing like many celebrity items do immediately after a death.

The real money is in the rare variants. Some signed copies included small doodles or personalized notes from Keaton, and those are commanding significantly higher prices. One copy with a slight embellishment in Sharpie sold for $500, nearly 10 times the original retail price.

Sold eBay listings for signed copies of Diane Keaton

We don’t expect to see prices wander much further from this mark. Interest in Keaton is at an all-time high because of her sudden death, and book sales will likely fall off in the next few weeks.

We recommend flipping any copies you have while people are talking about Keaton. Secure your profits and move onto the next flip. Speaking of which, check out our article on Daft Punk’s upcoming G-Shock or SuperStroke’s new Halloween collection if you want to know where to head next.
