New JRPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is having a historic debut
Expedition 33 Collector’s Edition is selling on eBay for ~$1500
The game disc retails at $50, and is also flipping on eBay for ~$80
Every so often, a new video game releases that completely defies expectations and captures the market. For resellers, this represents an incredible opportunity to make hundreds of dollars from a single flip. These are titles that build massive playerbases seemingly overnight, and the collectors and resellers that got in before the hype are very, very happy. Today, that game is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Sandfall Interactive’s first ever game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is having an all time great debut, and everyone has taken note. In a time where classic turn based RPGs like Final Fantasy have gone the way of the dinosaur, Clair Obscur is an innovative marvel in the genre.
It originally released on April 24th, selling one million copies in its first week, and hit two million in just 12 days, despite being free to play on Xbox Game Pass. For some perspective, multi billion dollar studio Bethesda dropped an all time classic, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Remastered, the same week and sold three million copies.
To think that Sandfall Interactive could compete side by side with an industry titan is its own remarkable feat, but Expedition 33’s resell numbers are in a league of their own.
For those of you that keep up, you know that the collector’s edition of major titles are often easy flips. Some of the greatest RPGs in recent memory like Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios, and Elden Ring by From Software both had their respective collector’s editions generate up to 5x profits post release. These results were expected considering marketing behind both games.
The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Collectors Edition retailed at $150 and is currently selling on eBay for an astonishing 10x profit. These high volume, huge margin sales really speak to the attention this game is getting from the community worldwide.
Prior to the release, we noted the Expedition 33: Collector’s Edition selling at about ~$400. The week of the release, after getting some well deserved media attention, sales were coming in at a healthy ~$600. Just one week later, the amount of players, as well as eBay sale prices, have more than doubled.
Being the debut title of a game studio founded 5 years ago, and a publishing studio founded 4 years ago, Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive could not have dreamed of a better outcome.
It’s important to note that the $50 game disc alone has been selling out at retailers across the country and is also flipping on eBay at about a 50% margin. Most games nowadays retail at $70, so the cheaper price tag could have been an important catalyst for Expedition 33’s success.
Still, it’s very rare for a game disc to resell considering anyone can download the game on PS5, Xbox, Steam, or Epic Games and be playing within an hour. This points to the possibility that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can further appreciate in value, and even the game disc alone can have long term hold potential.
The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Collector’s Edition includes:
Besides the rate of appreciation and insane amount of media attention the game is getting, Clair Obscur is a thematically unique experience. This IGN article describes how it draws from some of the greatest and most renowned RPGs ever, and weaves them together in an epic, heart wrenching tale that pushes all the right buttons for gamers.
If there wasn’t already enough hype for it, rumors of a live action Clair Obscur movie started circulating earlier this year. It’s more than clear that Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive have really outdone themselves with their major debut. Rivaling sales numbers of industry titans with major marketing dollars is a monstrous feat that could only be made possible with quality content.
If you’re a fan of classic turn based RPGs like Final Fantasy X, you NEED to play this game. If you’re new to the genre, this is a great place to start, especially if you have Xbox Game Pass. All in all, resellers and gamers agree that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a bonafide classic, 10/10.
Video game collector’s editions are actually one of the easiest flips out there. They’re listed for preorder months, even years ahead of the game’s release, and many publishers will hold off on charging you until the product actually ships.
Smart resellers spread their bets across multiple upcoming games. If they don’t review well, they can simply cancel the preorder. If they do well like Expedition 33 did, well, they make a lot of money with very little effort.
