Alamo Drafthouse is selling theirs for $45 with ticket preorders
Collectable popcorn buckets regularly flip for two to three times over retail
If you’re a fan of Blumhouse slop and want to make a little cash this month, we’ve got a great opportunity for you. Alamo Drafthouse has rolled out an exclusive line of merch celebrating the release of M3GAN 2.0, including a unique popcorn bucket. We’ve seen collectable popcorn buckets flip for hundreds of dollars in the past, and these M3GAN buckets look like a perfect candidate for your next flip. Let’s get into it.
It’s time to head to the cinema. While major studios like Marvel and Disney have been struggling to keep asses in seats these last few years, we’ve seen a surge in interest for low-budget high-return grindhouse productions.
M3GAN is a great example. The original film was a poorly acted, derivative, sci-fi/horror flick shot on a $12 million budget that managed to build a cult following. Now its sequel, M3GAN 2.0 is set to release later this month to even bigger profits.
And theaters are eager to get their slice of that pie. Exclusive popcorn buckets for M3GAN 2.0 are beginning to surface online, with Alamo Drafthouse’s catching our attention in particular. These are available for preorder right now alongside a (mandatory) ticket purchase.
M3GAN’s head swivels open to reveal her popcorn-brains, and the bucket was designed by Alamo Drafthouse’s own Grace Svoboda.
Alamo Drafthouse is selling their exclusive M3GAN 2.0 popcorn bucket for $45. Customers are required to purchase a ticket, and can optionally preorder one of these buckets. They must be picked up within 30 days of the purchased ticket or be forfeited.
Along with these buckets, Alamo Drafthouse is distributing a set of three enamel pins to all moviegoers during opening weekend. These depict a M3GAN family portrait, M3GAN with a bloody sword, and M3GAN’s battle-damaged face.
Alamo Drafthouse is giving these pins away for free to all ticketed guests while supplies last. If you’re planning to see M3GAN during its opening weekend, make sure you pick up one of these sets in the lobby.
Good question. If you’re out of the loop, collectable popcorn buckets have been big business for resellers in the last few years. We’ve seen tons of designs from multiple theaters flip for major profits, and these M3GAN 2.0 buckets look like another cook.
Want examples? We’ve got examples. Alien: Romulus premiered last summer, with collectable popcorn buckets from Cinemark and Regal flipping for around double their retail price.
And before that, AMC’s Dune 2 popcorn bucket took the internet by storm for it’s resemblance to a particular… male… product. In any case, the “Duneussy” popcorn bucket was flipping for up to $100 at it’s peak, over three times its retail price.
It might seem silly, but reselling popcorn buckets can be extremely lucrative. Most theaters don’t require you to purchase a ticket to buy one, so this M3GAN 2.0 release from Alamo Drafthouse is a bit unusual.
If you’re interested, it’s worth calling your local Alamo Drafthouse and seeing if there’s any wiggle room on that policy. It seems like these buckets will be pretty limited, so snagging more than one could be very profitable.
Make sure you subscribe to our newsletter if you want to learn more about reselling. We cover all kinds of flips, from limited edition trash bags (yes really) to Sydney Sweeney’s bathwater soap (yes, really). Join the fun today!
