The Perfect Blue Limited Edition SteelBook is available for preorder and releases June 16
This 3-disc set includes nearly two hours of previously untranslated Satoshi Kon lectures
Preorders are open now at Amazon, GKIDS, and other retailers for $50
Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue is one of the most influential animated films ever made, and now it’s getting the 4K treatment it deserves. Distributed by GKIDS and Shout! Studios, the Limited Edition SteelBook drops June 16 and is already shaping up to be the definitive home release of the film. Anime collectors have been waiting for a release like this for a long time, and it’s the kind of package that tends to move quickly once physical copies are out in the world.
Perfect Blue is a 1997 psychological thriller from director Satoshi Kon about a pop idol who leaves her music group to pursue acting, only to find herself unraveling as a stalker closes in and reality starts slipping. It’s widely cited as a direct influence on filmmakers including Darren Aronofsky, and its themes of fame and identity have only gotten more relevant with time.
This 3-disc set includes one 4K UHD disc and two Blu-ray discs. The standout addition for fans is a collection of three full-length Satoshi Kon lectures, subtitled in English for the first time, clocking in at 117 minutes. Additional bonus content includes cast and crew interviews, a recording session for the film’s theme, and theatrical trailers.
This is not Perfect Blue‘s first SteelBook release. A Blu-ray SteelBook dropped in 2021 and is still available on Amazon for $35. The 2026 edition is a clear step up in every way: better format, deeper bonus content, and more premium packaging. If you’re ordering, make sure you’re selecting the 2026 Limited Edition and not the older release.
SteelBooks are a reliable flip category when the film has a passionate fanbase and inventory runs tight. We’ve covered this before with Oppenheimer SteelBooks reselling for $60-$200 and Dune: Part Two SteelBooks flipping for double retail. Perfect Blue has the film credibility, no question.
The uncertainty here is that this isn’t a new theatrical release riding a box office wave. It’s a catalog title that already had a SteelBook release five years ago. The buyers for this are dedicated anime collectors, which is a passionate but narrower pool than a general blockbuster audience. There’s also no confirmed print run limitation, so availability may stay looser than ideal.
At $50 retail, the secondary market needs to hit $80+ for a reasonable flip after eBay’s 13% fee. Possible if stock tightens post-launch, but not a lock.
The preorder window actually helps here. Buyers can cancel their preorders before the June 16 ship date for a full refund if a secondary market doesn’t develop. That makes this significantly lower-risk than buying post-launch. If you preorder and prices don’t move, you can cancel. If they do move, you’re already positioned.
The window to watch is the week or two after launch. That’s when physical copies are in hand and secondary listings will tell you whether genuine demand exists. Until then, keep your preorder live and see how sentiment develops in the anime collector community.
