Key Points

  • The Mariners gave away 20,000 Jimothy trading cards last month including one 1 of 1 gold parallel

  • That gold card is now on eBay with the current bid at $8,100

  • Standard giveaway cards resell for $50 to $100, with rarer parallels hitting $500

Some stadium giveaways end up in a junk drawer, if they’re lucky. This one is listed on eBay with dozens of people fighting over it. The Mariners’ one and only gold Jimothy card went up for auction last week, and things are getting wild. Bids are already at $8,000 with five days left in the auction, and much of the demand is driven by a community of crypto meme coin traders (yes, seriously). One collector will walk away with an ultra-rare card depicting a malformed raccoon, and one seller will pocket a healthy chunk of change. How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Seattle Mariners Jimothy Card Giveaway

We all love Jimothy, the deformed, trash-raiding raccoon who went viral out of Seattle earlier this summer and somehow ended up adopted by the Mariners as an unofficial team mascot.

He showed up in scoreboard graphics, won a mascot race at T-Mobile Park, and got his own Jimothy Night promotion complete with a free trading card for the first 20,000 fans through the gates. Most of that print run was a standard base card, but the Mariners also seeded a handful of rare parallels into the giveaway, including a single 1 of 1 gold version.

By all accounts, the promotion was a huge success. 40,743 fans attended the game to see the Mariners route the Tigers, and almost half of them would go home with their very own Jimothy card.

The promotion went viral within Seattle, but it also attracted the attention of a community built around the $JIMOTHY memecoin. Traders and holders were actively soliciting attendees for their cards and Xitter before the game.

We’ve seen plenty of limited edition MLB giveaways resell for a profit, from bobbleheads to jerseys, but the interest around these cards was unprecedented. Even the most popular trading card giveaways like the Dodgers One Piece promos or Yankees Naruto Night cards were attached to an existing IP. These cards just had a freakishly deformed raccoon on them.

Still, it didn’t take long for sales to emerge on eBay. Within a few hours of the final pitch we were watching as cards traded hands for hundreds of dollars online. Even three weeks after the game, standard cards continue to resell for ~$50 while some rarer parallels have sold for upwards of $300.

Mariners 1/1 Gold Jimothy Card Auction Hits $8,000

Back to that ultra-rare 1/1 Gold Jimothy card. It was pulled by a 13 year old fan during the game who, by all accounts, couldn’t have been happier. It’s not every day that you come across something so special.

In the end, it seems like this fan elected to cash in on the opportunity. The card was put up as an eBay auction on August 20, and as of today, the listing sits at $8,100 across 75 bids. That’s already a rare outcome for a free stadium promo card, and given how quickly the price has climbed from a $1 opening bid, a final number north of $10,000 is well within reach. Auctions like this tend to see the sharpest jumps in the final hours, so the current price is far from a ceiling.

Gold 1/1 Jimothy Trading Card Auction

Taking a closer look at the seller’s profile, we find that they are based in Mukilteo, WA, about 25 miles north of Seattle, and their 800+ sales are almost entirely sports trading cards. It seems like the fan that pulled the card elected to sell it to a local card shop that’s now handling the auction. Hopefully she got a good price for it, because this card is about to sell for a hell of a lot of money.

Why Are People Bidding on This Card?

Part of what’s fueling the gold card’s price is a crowd that has nothing to do with baseball cards at all. There’s an active community built around the $Jimothy memecoin on Solana, and it’s been on a run of its own. The token’s market cap has jumped from roughly $7 million to about $16.8 million over the past week, and a chunk of that community has made clear they’re interested in owning the one true piece of physical Jimothy memorabilia.

$JIMOTHY Meme Coin Crypto Market Cap

When a community has that much fresh capital floating around, a handful of holders bidding for bragging rights is enough to push an auction well past what a typical sports card collector would pay.

Bottom Line

A $10,000-plus finish for a promotional stadium card would be practically unheard of, but this auction has the ingredients: genuine scarcity, a viral mascot, and a crypto community with money to spend on the flex.

It just goes to show that money can be hiding in the most unexpected places. We’ve been vocal about the value of MLB promos in the past, and it’s clear that attending the right games can result in hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in profit.
