The Mariners are giving away Jimothy rookie cards to the first 20,000 attendees to Wednesday’s game
Chase parallels include a 1 of 1 gold card, 1 of 100 silver, and 1 of 500 shiny blue
These could resell for several times the cost of admission
What better mascot for Seattle than a deformed, goblin-like raccoon seen rummaging through trash and galloping across streets? We’re talking, of course, about Jimothy. The Seattle Mariners are all set to celebrate the viral raccoon with a franchise-first “Jimothy Night”, including a giveaway of limited edition trading cards. One lucky fan will receive a gold 1-of-1 chase variant.
Since catching viral attention last month, Jimothy started popping up in scoreboard graphics during Mariners games, and would go on to win a mascot race at T-Mobile Park on July 18. Star outfielder Julio Rodriguez was seen handing out custom Jimothy t-shirts in the clubhouse, and now the team is making it official with Jimothy Night, a full theme night celebrating Seattle’s new mascot.
Alongside a t-shirt giveaway, the first 20,000 fans through the gates get a free Jimothy rookie card, with most of the run being a standard base version. Mixed in are four chase parallels: a 1 of 1 gold, a 1 of 100 silver, a 1 of 500 shiny blue, and a 1 of 2,000 numbered card.
What’s not confirmed is how the cards will actually get handed out. Many fans expect them to be distributed in sealed packs like traditional trading cards, but the Mariners haven’t spelled that out officially. Unless an employee leaks the packaging before tomorrow’s game, we’ll just have to guess.
The window for Jimothy’s memetic potential is definitely closing, but there’s still plenty of opportunity here. He’s a recognized figure well beyond Seattle, and we think there are enough fans and collectors out there willing to pay for these cards.
The biggest factor for resellers is whether or not these cards are distributed in sealed packs. If they are, expect the market to be hot out the gates as speculators buy up sealed packs hoping to rip something special. If not, prices will be lower and sales slower.
We’re most curious to see what the 1-of-1 gold card ends up selling for. Even a conservative estimate would be at least a few hundred dollars, with the potential to run over $1,000 if the hype is strong enough. If you’re attending tomorrow’s game, keep your card in the packaging if you intend to resell it.
This one hits a unique confluence of Seattlites, Mariners fans, and a global community sharing the love for a viral raccoon-gremlin. We’ll also point out that there’s a sizable number of $Jimothy memecoin holders that are vocally interested in this giveaway. With the coin sitting at a ~$4 million market cap right now, we might see one dedicated holder try and secure the card at an inflated price for the bragging rights.
Tickets for the game are on sale right now for prices as low as $11. While the T-shirt giveaway requires a special promo ticket, the Jimothy trading cards will be handed out to the first 20,000 fans through the gates. Limited edition giveaways can draw long lines at T-Mobile park; try to get there 2-3 hours early to ensure you snag a card.
It’s been a lucrative summer for MLB promos and giveaways. The Dodgers made waves in July with their second One Piece trading card giveaway, with raw cards reselling for up to $1,000 after the game. Meanwhile, ticket prices for the Yankees’ Naruto giveaway in September have exploded as collectors hope to get their hands on a one-of-a-kind promo. Presale listings for the cards are selling for up to $800 right now.
