Key Points

  • Signed copies of Elton John and Brandi Carlile’s “Who Believes in Angels” were sold for $14

  • Resellers saw the opportunity and grabbed it

  • Now they’re flipping for three to four times retail

Rock legend Elton John has linked with Brandi Carlile for a new album. “Who Believes in Angels?” released yesterday, and a limited number of signed CDs were sold earlier in the week. At $14, this was an incredible opportunity to snag Elton John’s signature for a ridiculously low price. Naturally, collectors and resellers were all over the drop, and now we’re seeing the CDs relisted on eBay for four to five times what they originally sold for.

He’s had a long career, but Elton John is still kicking around and making new music. “Who Believes in Angels?” is a three-way collaboration between John, Brandi Carlile, and Andrew Watt.

Originally concepted and recorded in 2023, Elton John told Rolling Stone that the record was written and finished in just 20 days. After a brief marketing campaign in February including a making-of documentary, “Who Believes in Angels?” released worldwide yesterday.

And to celebrate and haul in some extra dough, Elton John also sold a limited number of signed CD versions of the album. These were sold through a variety of outlets, including Newbury Comics and Josey Records for $14 to $20.

The opportunity here should be obvious. Elton John has been a superstar for decades; picking up his signature for the price of an Olive Garden entrée is something any reseller should have jumped on.

And it turns out a lot of resellers did. Recognizing opportunities like this is 90% of the job (the other ten being clicking a few buttons and ordering DoorDash.) A lot of these CDs ended up in the hands of resellers and now on their way to collectors, just with a little mark-up.

How much are we talking about? Right now, Elton John signed “Who Believes in Angels” CDs are reselling for upwards of $50, with some flipping for as much as $90.

Talk about easy money. Most retailers limited customers to just one CD so profits weren’t anything crazy, but it’s still a nice Wednesday afternoon flip.
