If you don’t keep up with racing, you might have missed out on the 91st 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend. Held exactly 100 years after the first race in 1923, this year’s event saw drivers across the world competing a variety of categories. Alongside the race, Rolex added a new watch to its Cosmograph Daytona collection. The “Le Mans” Daytona has already gone up for sale, and its only a matter of time before these sell for incredible prices.

What is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona?

This isn’t the first time a Cosmograph Daytona has been associated with motorsport. In fact, the model has a long history in racing. First produced in 1963, the Cosmograph was a variation of the standard Rolex. It soon gained popularity among amateur racers in Florida, and the its ubiquity in motorsport earned it the “Daytona” nickname, which soon became permanent.

Since then, the Cosmograph Daytona has been a mainstay on racetracks across the world. A variety of bezel and case designs have been produced since then. One of the most popular is the black and white “Panda” bezel, notably worn by Paul Newman during his career in the 70s.

Special versions of the Cosmograph Daytona have been given out to the victors of major races. For this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning drivers received an engraved Cosmograph Daytona to mark their achievement. The fun doesn’t stop there though, because a new line of Le Mans Daytona watches are being made available to the public.

Rolex 126529LN "Le Mans"

This weekend saw an opportunity for watch collectors and racing fans across the world to add a new piece to their collection, and a chance to rock a design formerly reserved for champions.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Le Mans”, reference number 126529LN, combines a classic case with cutting edge internals. It features the same functionality that made the model popular with racers, along with the black and white “Panda” or “Paul Newman” dial.

One interesting feature of the Daytona “Le Mans” is the inclusion of the 4132 caliber. This special variation on the 4131 design is highly optimized, and intended to use as little energy as possible. This not only improves accuracy, but extends the power reserve of the watch. That’s quite a benefit when you’re competing in races that run for 24 hours.

The Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” was made available to Rolex authorized dealers on Sunday, June 11. They were priced at $51,400. Despite the special-edition nature of the design, these are not limited models. They are a permanent addition to the Cosmograph Daytona line.

The Rolex Daytona "Le Mans" aftermarket

It’s been less than a week since the first sales of the watch, and the market has yet to take off. There are a few listings for it on Chrono24, but no definite list price has emerged yet.

We may have to wait a bit to see what collectors are willing to pay for this watch. The announcement came as a bit of a surprise, so it’s not like there was long period of time to build up hype. Considering that sellers are asking somewhere north of 50 grand for this piece, it’s not terribly surprising that sales are taking a bit to roll in.

That said, we do believe the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Le Mans” will have long term value. Unique watches like these tend to well over time, and it has a number of innovations in both technology and design. It will be a desirable timepiece for any Rolex collector, racing enthusiast, or Le Mans fan (fortunately these groups tend to cross over). $50,000 now may end closer to $70,000 in a short time.
