How to turn five cents into fifty dollars
The Mint produced 100,000 silver coins for the Army’s 250th anniversary
The coins were sold online for $105 and took around three hours to sell out
Resellers bought them in bulk, with individual coins flipping for just under $200
What’s better than a profitable flip? A profitable flip you can run back to back to back. Resellers had that opportunity yesterday with the US Mint’s latest release. These 250th Army Anniversary Silver Eagle coins dropped online and sold out in a few hours. Despite a tight quantity limit, many resellers were able to circumvent the restriction to load up on coins. Now they’re reselling, and we’re seeing profits of up to $1,000. Let’s get into it.
If you didn’t know, today marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Army, which traces its history all the way back to the original Continental Army that fought against the British.
It’s also Trump’s 79th birthday, so make sure you leave him a nice message on Facebook. Aside from parades and firework shows and all the usual stuff, the US Mint cooked up a special tribute to the Army.
100,000 250th Army Anniversary Silver Eagle coins were minted and sold ahead of the weekend. Fittingly, these were struck at the Mint’s West Point facility, and bear a special “W” mint mark to denote their origin.
The coins themselves are based on the popular Silver Eagle Bullion Coin introduced in 1986, featuring the “Walking Liberty” design on the head and eagle on the tail. They weigh in at one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, which is worth around $40.
The 250th Army Anniversary Silver Eagle coin was available for $105 through the US Mint’s website. They were strictly limited to 100,000, and customers were restricted to one coin per household. Each coin shipped with a satin-lined presentation case and certificate of authenticity from the Mint.
No special variations were produced for this coin. Their value is mainly derived from the “United States Army” privy mark and “W” West Point mark on the face as a special tribute for the Army’s 250th anniversary.
The coins went live on the Mint’s website at 9 A.M. Pacific on June 13. Strong collector interest led to them selling out in around three hours, faster than most projections.
And while they won’t be shipping until July, we’re already seeing sales. The US Mint 25APM 250th Anniversary Silver Eagle coin is currently reselling for just under $200, nearly double what the Mint sold it for.
So each sale represents $80 to $100 in profit, per coin. Pretty solid for a single flip, but it doesn’t end there. The Mint might have restricted customers to one coin, but this limit was very easily circumvented by using variable addresses and payment methods. Many resellers were able to buy multiple coins, with some able to secure as many as 20.
If our math is correct, that’s a potential profit of up to $2,000 under ideal conditions. Some resellers preferred to sell their coins in bulk to a middleman at a lower price. This cuts into the profit a bit, but is much easier and much faster.
No matter how you slice it, this was an excellent flip that literally anyone could take advantage of. Of course, RC Elite members were tipped off in advance, but we also shared the flip to anyone who asked on Twitter.
