Hot Wheels Original 16 Rally Set is Reselling for $900

Do you remember your first Hot Wheels? The brand originally launched in 1968 with sixteen scale model cars based on real and fictional souped-up cars. These “original 16” have since become popular with collectors, and Hot Wheels periodically rereleases premium versions on a semi-regular basis.

And for Mattel’s 80th anniversary, they’ve rolled out a special Rally Case Set featuring these original 16 cars in distinct Spectraflame Ruby Red paint. The drop was only open to members of Mattel’s annual Red Line Club.

Each car is a faithful reproduction of the original 16 Hot Wheels, featuring moving parts, chrome-plated chassis, independent torsion bar suspensions, and icon redline wheels.

Of course, resellers were there. We’ve made a ton of profit from previous Hot Wheels drops, from their recent Ferrari Heritage Sets to their collaborations with artists like Kenny Scharf and Daniel Arsham.

And it helps that Mattel offers thirty day returns for products from Mattel Creations. If the item fails to resell, you can simply ship it back for a full refund, completely eliminating risk from the reselling equation.

Fortunately, no one will be returning these sets. Right now, Hot Wheels Original 16 Rally Sets are reselling for up to $900 at a time, more than $300 over what they retailed for from Mattel.

While the strict one per customer quantity limit meant profits couldn’t get too crazy, this was still a very lucrative flip considering the minimal effort and time required. The hardest part of buying a set was the RLC membership (which costs $10 annually).
