Strips of 70mm film are being given out at select Oppenheimer screenings
The last chance to get one will be August 4
Only 70mm IMAX screenings have the strips, which resell for hundreds
How would you like to get paid to watch a movie? Sound too good to be true? Well, we’ve got something for you today that might change your mind. Select IMAX theaters are running a promotion, and the attendees will receive something special after the showing: a strip of 70mm film from the movie. While it’s up to them to decide what they’ll do with it, one option is to list it for sale. Considering the prices we’ve seen listed for these unique bits of memorabilia, this is shaping up to be quite an opportunity for resellers and film buffs alike.
It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Barbie at RC. Considering how much money the film has made resellers, can you really blame us. While Barbie has been in the spotlight on our blog lately, that doesn’t mean it’s the only movie turning a profit for resellers.
Today, we’re looking at a very unique collectible produced exclusively for Oppenheimer, and sold through AMC. Quick question, how would you like to own a real piece of the movie you just saw? A reel piece? Like, a piece of the reel? Get it?
Select IMAX theaters are giving out strips of 70mm film from Oppenheimer with a purchase of a ticket. Now, before anyone gets too excited, these aren’t actually clipped from the film used during the show. AMC isn’t going to go around destroying their 600 pound reels just to make a few souvenirs.
That said, the strips are a piece of real 70mm film, with scenes from the movie printed onto it. If you held it up to a projector, it would show a still from the movie like any other film. This is just a strip of film produced exclusively as a collectible.
It’s a pretty novel idea, especially considering how Oppenheimer is being marketed as a must-watch-in-IMAX sort of deal. We’re guessing most folks who get their hands on one will find somewhere to display it. That is of course, if they can find one.
With a piece of unique physical memorabilia like these film strips, there’s a limited number to go around. These are not handed out a just every showing, nor are they made easily available for purchase online.
Instead, you’ll need to head to a select showing of Oppenheimer at an AMC IMAX theater. Specifically, a theater with a 70mm projector. AMC has helpfully published a list of participating theaters here, but be warned, they’re not particularly common.
And you’ll need to attend a showing on the right day. The first two opportunities have already passed, but you’ll have one more shot this Friday. That’s right, if you buy a ticket to an Oppenheimer showing on 70mm IMAX on August 4, you’ll leave the theater with a promotional 70mm film strip.
Now, tickets are only $25, but the number of theaters participating are quite limited. Fortunately, there’s another option.
While the 70mm strips are obviously the more desirable option, there are also 35mm collectable Oppenheimer film strips. These are a bit more common, having previously been given out as freebies with purchases from the Oppenheimer gift store. Still, they’re an option for people without easy access to a 70mm showing.
AMC has not published a list of participating locations, so you’ll need to call around to theaters nearby to ask if they’re doing a 35mm showing. Otherwise, the promotion works the same way. August 4, buy a ticket, walk out with a film strip.
Now comes the obvious question: why bother? Sure, these strips are cool, but why go through the hassle to get one? Well, if the name of this website hasn’t tipped you off, it’s because these Oppenheimer film strips are reselling for quite a damn bit.
Now for the fun part. It’s been more than a week since the premiere of Oppenheimer, and we’ve already seen a sizable aftermarket emerge for these film strips. Remember, they’ve already been distributed twice, but Friday’s showing will be the last opportunity for fans to score a strip.
In that time, prices for both 70mm and 35mm strips have risen to remarkable levels. Currently, Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX film strips are reselling for around $200. The 35mm strips also resell, but are less popular. These usually go for around $80.
$200 off a $25 and attendance to one of the most popular movies in the last few years? This is a great opportunity for anyone loves film or making money, and now you can combine the two. Remember though, this is the last time these film strips will be handed out. After this Friday, the only way to get an Oppenheimer IMAX film strip is to buy from a reseller.
That’s all for today. If you’re heading to an AMC theater this week, you might want to check the lobby for some Barbie merch while you’re at it. Read our article on the Bobby Popcorn Buckets for the lowdown on everything at AMC that resells.
