Flappy Bird all over again
Target exclusive hardcover variants of Onyx Storm released this week
These were available for $35
Resellers have flipped them for as much as $120
Everything is getting a collector’s edition these days. Video games, movies, albums, cars, shoes, breakfast cereal, and even books. YA author Rebecca Yarros penned an exclusive deal with Target to produce special hardcover variants of her new book Onyx Storm, and fans have been fighting over these copies all week. As expected, resellers jumped in with both feet and are now flipping these books for three to four times their retail prices.
Onyx Storm, the 3rd installment in the Empyrean series by best selling author Rebecca Yarros, just released on January 21st.
Fans stormed book stores to get their hands on a copy, but anyone who had the alpha went to Target. What they were hunting for was the Target Exclusive Onyx Storm Hardcover Collector’s Edition which retailed at $35 and has already logged eBay sales over $100.
The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros is a fantasy romance series centered around an aspiring dragon rider named Violet Sorrengail who attends Basgiath War College. Themes of magic, war, and romance drive the story which is expected to go on for two more books after this one.
It’s gotten rave reviews from just about anyone who’s read it, but we’re only interested in how that affects market price. If you want to learn more about the story, check out this spoiler free review.
The series has been especially popular on “BookTok”, and the viral attention has secured thousands of new readers and additional sales for Yarros and her publisher Red Tower Books.
@fantasyfangirlspod NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS! We slept for 10 hours and then immediately dove into outline mode! Onyx Storm was originally available for pre-order early 2024, but considering how far away the actual release was, there was no indication that regular versions of the book would be profitable.
However, the hype around Onyx Storm far exceeded that of its predecessors, making the Collector’s Edition a notable opportunity. One of the best parts of this flip is that Target offers a 90-day return window so this was 100% risk free profit.
We suggest moving this item fast as demand might die a bit once the hype of the initial release dies down, but that shouldn’t pose a problem as long as your listings are active. The Target Exclusive Collector’s Edition is not to be confused with any other versions which are generally still available for purchase.
The Target Exclusive edition features an alternate cover and edges, a full color map, full color art in the book, and a ribbon bookmark.
It’s worth noting that the previous installments “Fourth Wing” and “Iron Flame” have seen a slight surge in the price of its special edition releases; logging sales around $50 in December 2024, but going for closer to $100 recently.
These Target Exclusive Onyx Storm Hardcover copies retailed for $35. Following the surge of fan of attention, these books sold out. Now resellers are flipping them for over $100 at a time, although sales have slowed down since the January 21 release.
This was just another lowkey, high margin flip for members of the best alpha community around, Resell Calendar. If you got the heads up days prior to the release, you might have been able to hit Target on your way to work and make an easy few hundred based on how many you were able to secure.
