Eminem’s Kamikaze Collection dropped on Thursday
Two special collectibles were available as signed editions
Items from the drop are reselling for triple what they retailed for
Hey, have you heard of Eminem? Aside from NFTs, opening pop-up restaurants, and acting, the rapper has also found time for his music career. On Thursday, his fans had the opportunity to buy from a unique collection of merchandise based on his 2018 album “Kamikaze”. Hoodies, caps, and t-shirts were available, and also some very exclusive collectables. Even better, some of the items from the collection were signed. Following the drop, many of the most popular items would go on to resell for significantly over retail, and the resellers who got in early scored some incredible profits.
If you’re a big fan of Slim Shady, then this was the collection for you. Eminem’s Kamikaze drop took place at around 10:30 A.M. Pacific on August 31 through Eminem’s website. A ton of products were put up for sale.
Most of the collection was clothes. Tees and hoodies primarily, with a ton of different designs. We also saw tote bags, caps, and sweatpants go live on Thursday. While these items are all cool, none were particularly limited.
What we’re interested in are two particular products: the Eminem Kamikaze Plane Statue, and the Eminem Kamikaze Display Vinyl. These were labeled as “limited edition” through Eminem’s site, and they were by far the most desirable parts of the collection. Additionally, a limited amount of each were sold with Eminem’s signature.
Let’s take a look.
So first, the plane. If you didn’t pick it up from the album’s name, there’s a lot of plane related imagery in “Kamikaze”. The album’s artwork featured a jet fighter (an F-86, if you care) crashing into a wall. The pilot is putting up his middle finger while doing so.
The plane statues sold during the Kamikaze drop are made from a hand-painted vinyl and stand about 7 inches tall. They’re a representation of the jet from the album’s cover crashing directly into the ground. Stamped on the wings are the numbers “313”, Detroit’s area code and a recurring motif in Eminem’s work.
Eminem Kamikaze Plane Statues cost $75, but there were also a limited number of signed versions that were sold during the drop. These cost a remarkable $313, but considering they came with a certificate of authenticity bearing Eminem’s signature, the price is actually pretty good.
We also saw a sale of unique 7″ die cut vinyl disks. These are not playable records (the plane would probably interfere with a record player), and are intended for display only. That said, they do look like vinyl record, with pseudo grooves along the plastic and a central label. They even ship in a plastic sleeve.
Like the statue, there were also signed versions of the Kamikaze Display Vinyl. Also like the plane, these cost $313. The standard prints were $40. Signed collectables from this collection absolutely flew when they finally went into stock, selling out in under a minute.
Considering how big of deal this drop was, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it sold out quick. There were a lot of people going for the limited products, and not everyone’s fingers were fast enough to check out in time. Since the initial sale, we’ve seen numerous aftermarket sales for items from the collection, and resellers have made a ton of profit off of it.
The day of the sale, several signed display vinyl disks and plane statues sold for two to three times what they retailed from Eminem’s store. Sales of $900+, even up to $1,000 were not unusual. For the lucky resellers that got in early and practiced entering their credit cards, this was their chance to make an easy $600 off a single flip.
And it’s still early! Eminem is a big deal, and his signature will be a big deal for the foreseeable future. These products are likely to only appreciate in value over time. The sales were seeing now are impressive, but there’s no reason to believe they’ll end there.
