Special lenticular SteelBooks for American Psycho were sold last week
Prices ranged from $50 to $165
Resellers have started listing them for three times retail after they sold out
Earlier this week, a new SteelBook version of “American Psycho” was sold. These featured clever lenticular packaging that superimposes particular scenes from the film over others. After they went live, it didn’t take long for the limited number of SteelBooks to sell out. Now, collectors are kicking themselves for missing out, and resellers are hoping this buy will end up being a huge payday. Let’s check it out.
So why are we talking about a 24-year-old movie based on a 33-year-old book? Well, stuck culture can be a lot of fun, and American Psycho is a great movie that’s had a second life under Zoomerdom.
To capitalize on that popularity, the Hong Kong-based company Collectong spun up a limited run of SteelBooks for the movie. While that might seem like nothing special, they actually went the extra mile here to produce something cool.
The SteelBook itself features a design from the artist Karl Fitzgerald, and comes with a lenticular slipcover. When moved from side to side, the cover morphs to show Patrick Bateman covered in blood or carrying a chainsaw.
Look at the subtle gray coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. My God, it’s even in 4K.
In addition to this objectively dope case/cover combo, these SteelBooks also ship with a host of other goodies. Character cards, artbook, and a set of postcards ripe for display, enshrinement, or future pieces of criminal evidence.
These SteelBooks were $50. A little pricey, but they’re also packed with more features and better designed than comparable SteelBooks.
They were also limited to just 1,000 total units. Collectong first started selling them on Friday morning, and they were all sold out in just a few hours. Customers were limited to a maximum of two, and orders are expected to ship in June.
For the serious collector, there was a bigger, better, and more expensive option, just like Patrick Bateman would want it.
If you had $170 hanging around, you could have bought one of these American Psycho SteelBook Boxes. In addition to the lenticular design we already showcased, this also featured an alternate lenticular and PET slipcover.
Not to mention all the goodies we talked about previously. These SteelBook Boxes were limited to just 600 total units, and sold out as fast as the other products.
Well, good question. The fact that these sold out so fast is certainly a good sign. Any time a popular product disappears in a few hours, resellers pay attention. Especially if they’re as limited as these SteelBooks.
As of right now, there are no recorded sales for any of the items from the collection through eBay. There is currently one listing for the SteelBook Box for $450 though, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on it in he next few days.
Will it sell? Will it go up? It’s hard to say. This is a cool product, but obscure. Collectong isn’t a household name, and it’s not clear if collectors will be willing to throw in behind it.
We’ll just have to wait and see. Sometimes, reselling is a waiting game; other times it’s a “click one button and make $1,000” game. This time it’s the former.
