Resellers have flipped them for close to $20
Now, everyone likes sugar. We don’t need to explain it, it’s just coded right into our DNA to search out sweets wherever we can find them. While that’s brought about all sorts of complications in the modern age like obesity and dental decay, it’s also created all kinds of new and exciting ways to spike your blood sugar. Last week, a new collaboration between Oreo and Sour Patch Kids launched online. For those able to keep their lunches in and wallets out, these half-candy, half-snacks were all money. Let’s take a look.
Any reseller worth their salt knows there’s a surprising amount of money to be made in food. It’s perishable for one, but more importantly it’s a consumable. It’s intended to be eaten, meaning the total number of products in circulation is always ticking down.
In the past, we’ve covered novelty food and drinks like the Maple Syrup Pepsi, Ritz X Oreo mashup, and last week’s TRUFF Star Wars hot sauce.
All of these rely on hype and curiosity to drive quick sales. These aren’t going to be anyone’s pantry staples, but if you can get someone wondering just what the hell “mustard-flavored Skittles” actually taste like, you can move a lot of product pretty quick.
So leave your taste buds out of the equation and think with the money-making part of your brain. Last week, Oreo launched a new collaboration with the candy brand Sour Patch Kids.
These are… exactly what they sound like. Their description promises “Oreo creme filled with multi-colored sour sugar inclusions, sandwiched between two Sour Patch Kids flavored basecakes with even more colorful inclusions”.
So it’s a sour Oreo. The cookies and creme are both supercharged with citric acid and fake colorings, and the whole package is loaded with enough sugar to turn any frown into a puckered grimace.
Hopefully you’re not too hungry by now. If you’re hankering for some sweet-sour treats and have a place in your pantry to hide these, you can actually preorder a bag from the Oreos website for $5.
When these first dropped last Thursday, the demand was so strong that Oreos actually sold out ofall their available bags. Naturally, resellers sniffed out the opportunity and starting making easy money.
Following their launch, Sour Patch Kids Oreos were reselling for nearly $30. Prices have cooled off a bit in the last few days, especially after preorders reopened.
Not a huge surprise really. Gimmick food and drink items like these tend to well in the short-term, and fall off hard in the following days. Extended production and a wide preorder window don’t tend to mesh well with a reseller’s strategy.
Still, these were a silly but profitable flip for a brief period. For the resellers that got in early, this their next few Chipotle orders covered.
