A Charizard-shaped Cheeto has resurfaced through Goldin Auctions
The current bid of $4,250 comes out to over $5,000 after the buyer’s premium
There’s still a week left on the auction
The “Cheetozard” is up for sale again. If you’ve got extra money and space in your collection for a stale Cheeto, here’s your chance to snag a one-of-a-kind Pokemon collectable. The current bid has risen to over $4,000, and there’s still a week left until the auction ends. What is the Cheetozard? Why are people offering so much money for it? Let’s get into it.
So you can probably guess from the name, but we’ll make things really clear just in case. The Cheetozard is a massive Flamin’ Hot Cheeto that resembles the Pokemon Charizard midflight.
And for all the “it really looks like” Cheetos that have been posted on social media, this one actually really does look like Charizard. Who knows what kind of arcane fusion that went down in Cheeto plant to create this beast, but the world is better with it than without.
According to the auctioneers, the Cheetozard was first discovered around 2018, putting it about 7 years past its “Best By” date. Then again, this Cheeto is for display, not digestion.
It was eventually acquired by 1st & Goal Collectibles, who mounted it on a custom Cheetozard card and built a display case around the snack.
Naturally, a collectible like this has traded hands a few times. It’s currently up for auction through Goldin, with bids open until March 1. Things started a little slow, but the Cheetozard worked its viral magic through the weekend as a flurry of new bids came in. The current offer is $4,250, which comes out to over $5,000 with the buyer’s premium.
There’s still plenty of time for that price to go up. Social media is already picking up on the listing, and journalists like us are covering the spectacle.
Good question, although the answer is invariably “whatever some dork will pay for it.” Charizard is one of Pokemon’s most recognizable mascots, and the relevant merch (does this count as merch?) is always popular.
With the Cheetozard already expected to gavel for over $5,000, who can say how much farther things will go. $10,000? $20,000? A million?
The most expensive Cheeto sale we have on record was for a Harambe-shaped Flamin’ Hot back in 2018. The resemblance is much worse in this case, but people were pretty stupid during that whole episode.
Is there a lesson to be learned here? Maybe it’s to take a close look at your food before shoving it in your face, or maybe you should learn how to bake counterfeit Cheetos and break out of the Matrix.
Who really knows. Hopefully the new buyer takes the Cheetozard to a good home, although it would be really funny if they just ended up eating it. When you’ve got a $5,000+ budget for snacking, a lot of possibilities open up.
