Caviar is Selling a $9,000 iPhone Case With Steve Jobs' Soul in It

Well, actually part of his turtleneck. Same thing, right?

Key Points

  • Caviar’s Jobs Edition iPhone 17 Pro starts at $8,990 and is limited to nine units worldwide

  • A fragment of Steve Jobs’ actual turtleneck from his NeXT computer presentation is embedded in the Apple logo

  • The nine-unit run is a deliberate nod to January 9, 2007, the launch date of the original iPhone

Okay, that was a little bait-and-switchey. The technology to to harvest, package, and distribute human souls for general sale is still in development, but you can be sure that Apple will be in the vanguard. So it’s perfectly befitting that Caviar, makers of some of the world’s swankiest phone cases, are honoring Steve Jobs with an ultra-limited run of iPhone 17 Pro cases embedded with one of tech’s most recognizable pieces of clothing.

Caviar Phone Cases Explained

If you’re not familiar with Caviar, the short version is that they are a luxury accessories company that has spent years turning iPhones into collector’s items for people with more money than sense. Past projects have included phones embedded with SpaceX rocket fragments, meteorite dust, and an actual Rolex Daytona integrated into the case.

For Apple’s 50th anniversary, Caviar launched a “Visionaries” collection, and the crown jewel is this Jobs Edition. The design references the original iPhone 2G, with a titanium body finished in silver and black PVD coating. Jobs’ signature is engraved on the frame, and it ships with a collector’s box, a certificate of authenticity, and a custom lock screen wallpaper.

Here is where things get surreal. Set into the decorative Apple logo on the back of each phone is a small authenticated fragment of a turtleneck worn by Steve Jobs during the presentation of the NeXT computer. The fragment comes with a certificate of authenticity with five levels of protection, because apparently that is a category of document that exists.

The choice of the NeXT presentation is interesting. Jobs founded NeXT in 1985 after being pushed out of Apple, and the company was eventually acquired by Apple in 1997, which is what brought Jobs back and set the stage for everything that followed: the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone. If you’re going to pick a turtleneck to immortalize in a phone, the NeXT era has a certain narrative poetry to it.

The nine-unit run is deliberate symbolism. January 9, 2007 was the day Jobs walked onto a stage and introduced the original iPhone to the world. Caviar is leaning all the way into the mythology here.

Is This a Flip?

No. Realistically, no. At $8,990 for the base configuration (256GB iPhone 17 Pro) and up to $10,790 for the fully loaded Pro Max, this is a buy for collectors and Apple obsessives with serious money. The market for $9,000 celebrity relic phones is real but extremely thin. Caviar products do occasionally resurface on secondary markets at premiums, but with only nine units in existence, any resale data will be nearly impossible to find, and holding a five-figure phone waiting on a buyer is not a position most resellers want to be in.

This one is worth knowing about because it will get coverage, and the concept is genuinely wild. It also fits a pattern worth tracking: limited luxury tech tied to cultural anniversaries tends to appreciate when provenance is authenticated and the edition count is this low. For someone with the capital and patience, there is possible a long-term hold case here (at best.) For everyone else, it is an excellent thing to bring up at parties.
