Valve's New Steam Controller is Reselling for Nearly $300

We saw that one coming

Valve Steam Controller 2026 Reseller Explained

Key Points

  • The Steam Controller launched on Steam yesterday at 10 AM PDT for $99 and sold out within 30 minutes

  • Units are currently listed on eBay in the $220 to $400 range, with an average around $275

  • Additional restocks are expected

Update: Valve will be restocking the Steam Controller on May 8 at 10 AM Pacific, more details below

Valve spent eleven years in the wilderness before taking another crack at a PC gaming controller, and it turns out people really, really wanted one. Yesterday’s launch lasted about 30 seconds before the Steam Store buckled and every unit was gone. If you missed it, you’re either waiting on a restock or paying someone else’s markup on eBay. The latter is already looking like a solid flip if you were lucky enough to secure one.

What Happened With the Steam Controller Launch

The original Steam Controller launched in November 2015 as a bold experiment: replace the right analog stick with a circular trackpad to better approximate mouse movement for PC games. It found a devoted niche among strategy and sim players, but never went mainstream. By 2019, Valve was clearing out remaining inventory for five dollars apiece. It was discontinued that same year.

The second generation, announced in November 2025, takes a different approach. Valve kept the trackpads but added real thumbsticks, magnetic TMR sensors, back buttons, haptic motors, and 35+ hours of battery life.

The new controller is the first piece of a three-part hardware rollout that also includes the Steam Machine console and the Steam Frame VR headset. Memory shortages have pushed those two back into an indefinite delay, so the controller launched alone yesterday, absorbing all the demand that had been building for the full ecosystem.

The buy button went live at 10 AM PDT and the Steam Store immediately started throwing transaction errors. Some users spent 20 to 40 minutes spamming checkout before either getting through or watching the item go out of stock.

Would-be buyers that missed the drop were quick to come up with theories on why the sale was so short, with some claiming it was a sign of constricted production on Valve’s part. Obviously, these controllers don’t have any RAM and are not affected by the current market restrictions, so yesterday’s sale seems to indicate that Valve simply underestimated demand for the controller.

Still, it’s indicative that the company has already sold out of their latest hardware launch. With two more (theoretically) scheduled for a 2026 release, resellers should keep a close eye on the market for future drops from Valve.

Valve acknowledged the drop did not go as planned. A restock for the Steam Controller is planned for May 8 at 10 AM Pacific through Valve’s website. Additional restrictions have been added to be eligible for a preorder:

  • Reservations will be limited to one Steam Controller per user.

  • Once you receive an order email, you have three days (72 hours) to make your purchase on Steam.

  • For now, customers who have already purchased a Steam Controller are not yet eligible to reserve another Steam Controller.

  • Your account must be in good standing on Steam

  • You must have made a purchase on Steam prior to April 27, 2026

2026 Steam Controllers Resell

eBay listings are all over the place, as you’d expect in the first hours after a sellout. Confirmed orders are coming in as low as around $220, but boxed sealed units are listing in the $200 to $300 range, with at least a few listings attempting $400. The $275 neighborhood is where the bulk of actual sales appear to be landing.

At $275 sold versus $99 retail, that’s a gross profit of $176 before fees. After eBay’s 13% cut, you’re netting roughly $140 per unit. Not bad for a morning’s work, and the margins are real because the demand is real: this is good hardware from a company people trust, not a manufactured hype product.

2026 Steam Controller for Sale Scalper

Prices are still holding around the $2oo to $250 mark following the announcement of a restock. We’ll be watching closely to see if the additional wave of preorders dilutes the market or if resellers continue to make a profit.

What Resellers Should Understand

The Steam Controller is theoretically the least supply-constrained product in Valve’s 2026 lineup. It has no RAM, no complex display technology, nothing that’s been disrupted by the current memory shortage. If Valve couldn’t keep the controller in stock for 30 minutes, resellers should take that as a direct signal about what’s coming when the Steam Machine and Steam Frame launch.

Valve Steam Frame Reseller Machine Controller

We wrote about the resell potential of Valve’s full 2026 hardware lineup back in November, and the controller’s sellout makes that case even stronger. The Steam Machine and Steam Frame are the harder products to build at scale, and they’ll carry the hype that the controller absorbed yesterday times the enthusiasm of a full ecosystem launch. If you’re not already tracking those releases, start now.

Bottom Line

This is a clean flip if you got one. The margins are solid at current prices, demand is legitimate rather than hype-driven, and the sell side is liquid right now while buyers are still panicking. List it, sell it, and move on. Do not hold this one waiting for a collector’s premium that will not come.

Stay tuned for more details on the Steam Machine and Steam Frame. With production bottlenecks obviously impacting Valve’s release schedule, these will likely be even harder to buy than these Steam Controllers and potentially much more lucrative.
