Key Points

  • The Casio CA-500WEBF-1A releases October 27 for $120 through Casio’s website and select retailers

  • Early Japanese market sales on eBay show sold prices between $200 and $376, with most landing around $270-320

  • This is a limited edition release with unspecified quantities, and Casio has stated availability will be constrained

Casio calculator watches already had their moment in the sun thanks to Marty McFly, and in just a few days the CA-500WEBF-1A will release in the US. Based on and celebrating the popular timepiece from the film, Casio will drop the watch just after “Back to the Future Day”. These have already sold out in Japan, and now it’s your turn to get in on the profits.

Casio CA-500WEBF-1A Details

This collaboration makes perfect sense. Michael J. Fox wore Casio calculator watches throughout the original trilogy, starting with a CA-500 style model in 1985. The watches became so iconic to the films that they’re basically inseparable from the franchise now.

The watch face takes cues from the time machine’s taillights and that famous OUTATIME license plate. The multicolored calculator buttons mirror the time circuits Doc Brown used to punch in destination dates. Flip it over and you’ll find the flux capacitor engraved on the caseback. Even the buckle carries the Back to the Future logo. Casio went all in on the details, including VHS-style packaging that looks like a vintage video rental.

Beyond the movie tie-in, this is still a fully functional calculator watch with an eight-digit calculator, dual time, stopwatch, daily alarm, and auto calendar. Water-resistant with a stainless steel bracelet and resin case, it’s built for actual wear.

Casio has been on a streak with their collaborations lately. Their Hidden and Daft Punk G-Shock designs both went viral and flipped for solid profits.

Their US website will list the watch at $120. European markets get it starting October 28 for €119. UK pricing is £115. Given the limited quantity announcement, the watch could sell out fast. We’re expecting this to sell out fast, so don’t sleep when these drop.

Japanese retailers got early stock and those units are already moving on eBay. A check of sold listings shows consistent demand with prices roughly double to triple retail. One Japanese seller managed to flip theirs for over $500.

This is the only market that’s received stock so volume is low, but every listing that went up sold quickly. The watches came with full packaging including that VHS-style box, which matters to collectors.

Japanese Casio Back to the Future Watch Listed on eBay

Back to the Future carries serious nostalgia weight with multiple generations. The 40th anniversary timing brings the franchise back into public consciousness. The watch itself is wearable rather than purely collectible, which expands the potential buyer pool. The $120 retail price point is low enough for impulse buys from casual fans, high enough that double retail still feels reasonable for buyers who missed the drop.

The limited quantity combined with the anniversary release date creates scarcity. October 21 is “Back to the Future Day” from the second film when Marty travels to 2015, so it has significance to fans.

Are These Worth Buying?

Casio didn’t specify production numbers. If they made 50,000 units instead of 5,000, the secondary market gets flooded and prices normalize fast. Watching sell-through speed over the next few days will tell you whether to list immediately or hold.

This isn’t explicitly listed as a final sale, but watch retailers rarely offer returns for limited edition pieces. If you can’t flip it, you’re stuck holding a $120 watch. Not a disaster since the watch has actual utility and wearability, but it ties up capital.

The market could cool quickly if hype doesn’t sustain. Movie anniversary collaborations sometimes spike then crash within weeks. The Back to the Future franchise has staying power, but that doesn’t guarantee watch values hold through holiday season.

This watch should flip for solid profit if you secure one at retail. $120 in, $250-300 out after fees puts you at $100-150 per unit. Not massive margins but low risk since the product has real value and multiple buyer audiences.

Early Japanese market sales show consistent buyer demand at 2-3X retail. If US market follows that pattern and Casio keeps quantities tight, you’re looking at reliable profit through end of year. Check Casio’s website inventory after launch to gauge production numbers based on sell-through speed.
