These were one of the most lucrative flips of 2023
Expected retail price upwards of $500 based on similar BEAMS collaborations
Original 2010 Japanorak became a secondary market legend with cult status among collectors
Likely reselling for three to four times retail, possibly more given the hype
It’s time for a real battle royale. In one week, possible the biggest single clothing release of the past few years will go live. BEAMS and Ralph Lauren have worked together with Daku Nishiyama on the “Japanorak.” Resellers will fight tooth and nail to secure one of these coveted jackets, and we can’t wait to see what they get scalped for. They go live globally February 2, but Japanese customers will be able to get in on the action early.
The original Japanorak was a Japan-only release in 2010 that instantly became grail status. Inspired by Polo’s early ’90s Snow Beach era, it fused Tokyo street style with American heritage in a way that captured both worlds perfectly. The jacket became a bridge between Lo Life culture from Brooklyn and Japanese Americana obsession.
BEAMS has been a legendary force in Japanese fashion since 1976, pioneering lifestyle retail by curating American styles for the Japanese market. When they team up with Polo Ralph Lauren, collectors pay attention. This reissue celebrates BEAMS’ 50th anniversary, which adds even more weight to the release.
This is a pullover anorak in deep navy with premium leather hardware on zippers and drawstring toggles. The exterior features “JAPAN” in bold all-caps across the front utility pocket with the national flag. Inside you get a vibrant royal blue lining. While the fabric has been updated to be smoother and more durable, all the original details remain intact.
Designer Daku Nishiyama, Ye’s barber in Japan, played a key role in restoring attention to the jacket’s legacy by creating a special white version. His involvement brought the Japanorak back into the conversation and helped build hype for this reissue.
No confirmed retail price yet, but expect it to be upwards of $500 based on BEAMS’ premium collaborations. Previous BEAMS x Polo pieces have commanded serious money, and this one has 15 years of pent-up demand behind it.
Conservative estimate puts resale at three to four times retail, which means $1,500 to $2,000 if retail hits $500. But given the cultural significance and limited quantities, the ceiling could be much higher. The original has been called a “secondary-market legend” for a reason.
After fees, you’re looking at profits of $800-1,200 per jacket at those price points. That’s serious money for a single clothing item.
BEAMS hasn’t announced if the February 2 global online release will use a raffle system, queue, or just open the floodgates. If they don’t implement some kind of protection, bots will absolutely feast on this drop.
Resellers should take a swing at the online release regardless of the system. Even with bots running, manual checkouts happen on hyped releases when servers get overwhelmed and systems crash. Have your payment info saved, autofill ready, and be logged in 30 minutes early.
The in-store Tokyo release on January 31 gives you two days head start on the global market. If you’re in Japan or know someone who is, this is worth pursuing aggressively.
Anyone reading this who will be in Tokyo when this drops should make an effort to get to BEAMS Shinjuku on January 31. Camp out if you need to. The profit from one jacket could pay for your entire trip.
BEAMS releases usually have strict limits (one per person), but even a single cop at this level is a major win. Factor in that you can list it immediately and have it sold before you leave Japan.
The yen is still relatively weak against the dollar, which makes the retail price more accessible for international buyers physically in Japan. Your purchasing power goes further, and your profit margins get even better.
For the online release, have multiple devices ready. Desktop, phone, tablet if you have one. Different browsers, different accounts if possible. Hit refresh at drop time and pray you get through.
If you cop, list immediately. Don’t wait to see how the market develops. The highest prices will be in the first 24-48 hours when supply is lowest and FOMO is highest. Take your profit while hype peaks.
For the Tokyo release, get there early. Like, really early. Japanese streetwear drops attract serious campers who will line up overnight. Bring a friend, bring supplies, treat it like a sneaker release.
