Mattel is selling their 2024 Dia de Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls for $75
They flipped for around $100, but a restock has killed the market for now
A 2024 Barbie Dia de Muertos “Special Edition” doll has not been confirmed
Mattel has officially launched their 2024 Barbie Dia de Muertos dolls, and this year Ken is joining in the fun too. At $75 a doll, these are premium pieces angled at collectors. The line began in 2019, and has become a yearly tradition after they sold extremely well. 2024’s Dia de Muertos Barbies have not sold as fast as previous years, and resellers are holding off for the moment. Here’s what you need to know.
Spooky season is fast approaching, and that means big money for resellers. In between flipping Halloween decorations, Oogie Boogie Bash tickets, and even seasonal Buc-ee’s merch; there’s plenty of profit to be made on toys.
In 2019, Mattel introduced their first Dia de Muertos Barbie. Designed by Javier Maebe, the dolls quickly blew up within Barbie collectors’ circles, and became one of their most desirable designs of the last few years.
We covered them a few years after their release, and at the time they were regularly reselling for up to $500. Since then they’ve remained extremely collectable.
And Mattel took the hint. Following the success of 2019’s Dia de Muertos Barbie, Mattel has produced a new doll for the holiday every year, each time featuring a new dress and makeup.
These have been reasonably popular, but still nowhere close to 2019. Still, they’ve reliably sold out and have been a fairly consistent source of profit for resellers when fall rolls around.
After a late reveal in August, Mattel finally rolled out their 2024 Dia de Muertos Barbies on September 2. They were available for two days ahead of their public release to Barbie Club 59 members.
This year, Mattel released both Barbie and Ken versions of their Dia de Muertos dolls. Priced at $75 each, the dolls feature serious attention to detail, with intricately tailored clothing and Calavera skull makeup. They are available both online and at major retailers.
While the Dia de Muertos line has been popular with Barbie collectors, the 2024 dolls have not sold as well compared to previous years. After the initial stock sold out, Mattel restocked both dolls on September 10, and are still available as of this writing.
When the dolls were leaked on social media, people called them “cheap looking” and “overpriced“. It seems like that sentiment might have translated into slower sales on Mattel’s site and eBay.
Still, these have been reselling over the last two weeks. Sales were at their highest following the release, and it seems like the recent restock has knocked prices and volume down a few notches.
At their peak, 2024 Dia de Muertos Barbies were reselling for around $100. 2024 Dia de Muertos Ken dolls are also popular, and resell for a similar price. Bundles of both dolls have flipped for up to $250, netting resellers around $100 or so in profit on a good sale.
But like we said, these profits have definitely dried up with so many dolls still in stock through Mattel and local retailers.
If you’re on the fence about buying one, remember that Mattel offers a full refund (minus shipping and processing fees) within 30 days of your purchase. These might not be a super popular product right now, but they are essentially risk-free.
Before we wrap up, there’s one more thing we need to cover. In the last few years, Mattel has started to introduce “special edition” Dia de Muertos Barbies. These are typically made in collaboration with another brand or designer.
Around this time last year we covered the Pink Magnolia Dia de Muertos Barbies. These were separate from the “mainline” 2023 Dia de Muertos Barbies, and sold for $165. They were wildly popular with Barbie collectors, and ended up flipping for over $300.
We don’t know if Mattel will be producing a Special Edition 2024 Dia de Muertos Barbie. They are usually revealed some time in September, and then release in early October. If a Special Edition is in the works, expect to hear about it very soon.
We’ll be keeping our eyes on Mattel’s feeds in the next few weeks, and we recommend you do the same. Dia de Muertos Barbies have become one of their most popular products, and there’s a very good chance they’ll be back soon with a real head-turner.
Until then, subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on everything worth reselling. We cover all kinds of profitable products, from collectable video games to collectable popcorn buckets.
