Swatch x AP Royal Pop Pocket Watches Resell for $1,500+

When Swatch announced its collaboration with Audemars Piguet, the assumption was wristwatch. AP Royal Oaks start north of $30,000 at retail, so a sub-$500 entry point with AP branding seemed like a layup. Then Swatch revealed the Royal Pop is a pocket watch.

Eight bioceramic cases, two styles: the Lépine (crown at 12 o’clock, $400) and the Savonnette (crown at 3 o’clock with subsidiary seconds, $420). Each case pops into a holder that attaches to a lanyard, a bag, or a desk stand. No wrist mounting option exists, and Swatch has said none is planned, although third parties have unveiled mockups to convert the Royal Pop into a wristwatch.

The movement punches above its price point. The manually wound SISTEM51 caliber carries 15 active patents, delivers over 90 hours of power reserve, and uses a Nivachron balance spring, the same anti-magnetic material found in several actual AP references. Color-changing barrel drums indicate remaining power reserve. For a $400 watch, that’s a legitimate spec sheet, and watch collectors have taken notice alongside resellers.

The launch itself was chaotic. Crowds grew unruly at multiple locations worldwide, French police deployed tear gas outside a store near Paris, and Swatch closed several locations citing safety concerns for customers and staff.

All eight colorways are moving on eBay, with sold listings ranging from $1,400 to $2,400. The standout is the Ocho Negro, the black and white design, which is drawing the strongest demand and commanding prices at the top end of that range.

Here’s where the Royal Pop diverges from the MoonSwatch playbook in an important way. Swatch has confirmed this release will not be as production-limited as that collaboration. Supply will continue entering the market on a rolling basis as stores allocate their daily inventory. That one-per-day policy creates a controlled drip, not a hard cap.

What that means for prices: expect the current $1,400-$2,400 range to hold for the next few weeks as early buyers and hype-driven collectors absorb existing supply. After that, as more units hit the secondary market, prices will likely compress steadily toward a lower equilibrium. This is not a situation where holding for six months is clearly the right call.

The collector angle may slow that descent somewhat. The AP connection is real, the movement specs are impressive for the price point, and the pocket watch format is unusual enough to attract watch enthusiasts who aren’t purely chasing resale margins. That kind of collector demand can put a floor under prices that pure hype drops don’t have.
