Key Points

  • The LEGO Icons Lord of the Rings Minas Tirith set (11377) retails for $649.99 with 8,278 pieces

  • LEGO Insiders can preorder starting June 1, with general sale opening June 4

  • Purchases from June 1 to June 7 include the Grond battering ram set as a free gift with purchase

After months of leaks and speculation, LEGO officially dropped the details on the Minas Tirith set this week, and the specs are exactly as wild as the rumors suggested. At 8,278 pieces and $650, this is one of the biggest Lord of the Rings sets LEGO has ever made, built to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary. If you’ve been sitting on the fence since the leaked images surfaced last December, the wait is over — and there’s a narrow window to make this set a lot more affordable.

LEGO Minas Tirith 11377 + Grond GWP

LEGO’s Minas Tirith is built as a hybrid-scale display model: a wide microscale cityscape on the outside with minifigure-scale interior scenes you can actually explore. The finished build measures over 23 inches tall.

It comes with 10 minifigures including Gandalf the White, Aragorn as King Elessar, Arwen, Faramir, Denethor, Pippin in Gondorian armor, and four Soldiers of Gondor, plus a Shadowfax horse figure. For LotR collectors, figures like Aragorn as King Elessar and Arwen are exclusive to this set.

LEGO Insiders get early access starting June 1, with general sale on June 4. A LEGO Insider membership is completely free and you can sign up online.

Anyone who purchases the Minas Tirith set between June 1 and June 7 will receive the LEGO Grond set (40893) free with their order, while supplies last. Grond is the massive battering ram used during the Siege of Minas Tirith in Return of the King. It includes two Orc minifigures and is scaled to pair with the main set.

LEGO has been explicit that Grond supplies are limited and the window closes after June 7. That combination of a short time window and expected high demand makes this one of the more compelling GWPs we’ve seen attached to a set at this price point.

Lego Minas Tirith Grond GWP 40893

We covered the same strategy when LEGO released the Barad-dûr set in 2024. That set came with the Fell Beast as a GWP, which flipped for $100 to $150 on eBay within weeks of release. Exclusive minifigures from that drop pulled $50 to $100 each. Resellers who moved those components while keeping the main set effectively bought a $460 display piece for somewhere between $160 and $300.

The Minas Tirith situation looks comparable, possibly better. The set is $190 more expensive, the minifig selection is strong, and LEGO is already signaling that Grond supplies will run out before the purchase window closes. That’s not the kind of language they use for a GWP they’ve produced in bulk.

How to Resell LEGO Minas Tirith Pieces

This is not a set that will sell out at retail. LEGO doesn’t work that way for mainline Icons releases, and a $650 price point means a smaller pool of buyers to begin with. Don’t buy this hoping to flip a sealed box for a profit.

The play is the same one we laid out when this set leaked last December: buy with the intent to keep the set, then recoup a significant chunk of the cost by selling off the Grond GWP and select minifigures in the first 30 days after release.

Based on what comparable LotR LEGO components have sold for, here’s a reasonable range:

  • Grond GWP set: $80 to $150
  • Aragorn and Denethor minifigs: $30 to $50
  • Arwen minifig: $20 to $40
  • Gondorian soldier figures: $10 to $20 each

Move two or three of the most valuable minifigs along with the Grond set in the first month and you’re looking at $100 to $300 in recovered value. That brings your effective cost down to $350 to $550 depending on execution.

Risk Factors

A few things to keep in mind before you commit. While LEGO offers returns for unopened sets, that policy will be voided once you begin parting it out and selling minifigs.

The Grond GWP in particular is worth moving fast. GWP values tend to front-load, with peak prices in the first two to four weeks dropping off as more copies hit the market. List it early.

Also worth noting: if LEGO produces Grond in larger quantities than they’re letting on, or if a similar figure gets included in a cheaper set down the line, secondary market values will fall. This is speculative upside, not guaranteed income.

Bottom Line

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan or a LEGO collector who’s been planning to buy this set, the window between June 1 and June 7 is when you want to pull the trigger. The Grond GWP is limited, LEGO has flagged it explicitly, and the demand for exclusive LotR minifigs has been consistent through multiple releases at this point.

Pure resellers with no interest in keeping the set should skip it. The margins on parting out don’t justify the upfront cost if you’re not personally attached to owning a 23-inch Minas Tirith on your shelf.
