Swatch's Audemars Piguet Collab is Not a Wristwatch

When Swatch confirmed it was collaborating with Audemars Piguet, the watch world went into a frenzy. AP Royal Oaks start at roughly $30,000 at retail, so the idea of a sub-$1,000 offering with AP’s branding stamped on the face seemed like an incredible opportunity.

Following the initial reveal, Swatch began to dripfeed additional snippets and teasers, but deliberately kept the design of the watch close to their chest. Speculators quickly spun up potential designs of a Swatch X Audemars Piguet wristwatch, but others began connecting the dots that suggested Swatch would be dropping something entirely different.

The full reveal came on May 12, confirming that the Swatch Royal Pop would not be wristwatch, and instead a modular, poppable pocket watch.

There are eight pocket watches across two case styles: the Lépine (crown at 12 o’clock) and the Savonnette (crown at 3 o’clock, with a subsidiary seconds dial). The cases are bioceramic, 40mm without the clip, and 8.4mm thick. They pop into a holder that attaches to a calfskin lanyard, a bag, or a removable desk stand. There is no wrist mounting option, and according to Hodinkee, there are no plans to offer one.

The movement is legitimately interesting. The SISTEM51 manual-wind caliber carries 15 active patents, 90-plus hours of power reserve, and an anti-magnetic Nivachron balance spring, the same material found in several actual AP models. The barrel drums change color to show power reserve status.

Per Hodinkee, the Royal Pop has already launched at select Swatch locations ahead of the official May 16 availability date. It’s unclear which stores they’re referring to, but that’s valuable information for resellers looking to profit here.

eBay has been flooded with presale listings for the Swatch Royal Pop, many of which were put up and sold before the watch’s design or price were revealed, suggesting hype for this collab was high enough for collectors to invest in the launch without even knowing what it looked like or what it cost.

Many, but not all, of these sold listings featured AI-generated mock-ups of the Royal Pop as a wristwatch. Other sellers have updated their listings to reflect the newly revealed design, and the fact that these listings have sold indicates that the watch’s form factor has not diluted collector interest.

Swatch has not announced a production cap, so supply will keep entering the market every day stores are open. The one-per-customer-per-day policy creates launch-day scarcity, but it doesn’t cap total production. If the MoonSwatch is any reference point, demand will peak at launch and taper as the secondary market fills up.

The window for the best margins is right now. If you’re near a participating Swatch boutique and can get in line for May 16, the flip opportunity is real — but treat it like any hype drop with no hard production limit. The longer you hold, the more the premium will compress.

There’s also a collector angle here. The pocket watch format is genuinely unusual, and the AP connection makes these hard to ignore for watch enthusiasts. That could prop up demand longer than a typical Swatch collab.
