Oppenheimer Best Buy SteelBooks Are an Easy Flip

You’ve probably heard of “Oppenheimer” by now. After premiering alongside “Barbie” in July, Christopher Nolan’s latest film has been on an absolute tear at box offices and critic’s columns across the country. It’s finally getting a home release this month, and fans are ready. While you can stream it, serious cinephiles will look to pick it up as a physical release. Special Best Buy exclusive SteelBooks were produced as part of this release, and now resellers are earning a tidy profit by flipping them.

In an age of streaming convenience, you might be wondering if anyone still gives a hoot about physical media. Why buy a movie when you can just watch it on your phone like the director intended?

It turns out that there’s still a considerable market for Blu-Rays in 2023. In fact, Christopher Nolan himself recommends buying “Oppenheimer” on disc, instead of leaving your collection’s fate to the whims of a streaming service.

That’s not bad advice at all, considering the recent headlines of underperforming films being pulled from streaming, and some finished films never even reaching their audiences.

“Vaulting” and “sunsetting” are terms well familiar in live service video games, but who knew they’d end up being equally applicable to movies?

Anyways, we’re not here to harp about late stage capitalism. Or at least, we’re here to talk about how late stage capitalism can serve you, the hardworking reseller.

Today we’re looking at a particular bit of physical media, the Best Buy exclusive SteelBook release of “Oppenheimer“.

Included are three discs; one a standard definition Blu-Ray, a 4K release, and one disc of special features.

But the real draw of the collection is the SteelBook packaging. If your goal is to display your movies, then the case they come in is what really matters.

SteelBooks are a great way to show off your taste in film, and the “Oppenheimer” SteelBook is certainly a looker. Drenched in fire and appropriately stark, both the inside and outside of the case are striking.

Unfortunately for collectors, “Oppenheimer” SteelBooks were exclusively sold through Best Buy, and are now completely sold out. Fortunately for resellers, they’re now completely sold out.

When these movies went live earlier this month, resellers noticed. Collectibles like these are often quite profitable to flip.

Considering just how much hype “Oppenheimer” has been getting, this looked like an item to go after.

Right now, “Oppenheimer” SteelBooks are reselling for anywhere from $60 to $200 at a time. These originally retailed for under $40 and were not limited, meaning resellers were able to secure up to hundreds of dollars in profit if they were quick enough.

On November 24, Best Buy pulled the listing for these SteelBooks. Many fans took this as a sign that the product would be discontinued, but that’s not necessarily true.

Generally when a product like this is delisted it doesn’t come back, but when the “Dune” SteelBook was pulled last year it would eventually restock. That said, most of those SteelBooks were appearing in stores and not online.

What does this mean for you, the reseller? Keep an eye out for restocks of “Oppenheimer” SteelBooks. Best Buy may simply update the current listing, or create a new one entirely.
