Yesterday morning, Depeche Mode sold a limited number of vinyl records
The 12″ records contained two songs, both remixes of their track “Ghosts Again”
They sold out at $25, and are reselling for $70
Earlier this month, Depeche Mode sold a limited number of vinyl records for their single “Ghosts Again”. Part of their 2023 record “Memento Mori”, the song was extremely well received and fans of the band were eager for a more collectable format of the song. Remixed vinyl versions of “Ghosts Again” have since sold out, and fans are paying up to three times what it originally retailed for.
The story behind Depeche Mode’s latest album and the single “Ghosts Again” is pretty tragic. Work on the album “Memento Mori” began in 2022, with much of the songwriting revolving mortality and death in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
That theme would become much, much more personal to the band. In May 2022, founding member Andy Fletcher died at the age of 60 from an aortic dissection. His death was sudden, unexpected, and deeply shocking to the members of the band.
Work on the album was in its early stages, and it would be several months before fans would receive a confirmation that the band even planned to continue on without Fletcher. By late 2022, that confirmation would come through, along with the album’s title “Memento Mori”, popularly translated as “Remember you will die“.
The record largely builds on their early work as electronic pioneers, and toes a line between meditative and melancholy.
“Ghosts Again” was the first single for the album, which was released on February 9, 2023. The full album would drop on March 24 to widespread praise. Critics reviewed the album as their best since the 80s, and it quickly hit the #2 spot in the UK and #14 in America.
Since its release, “Ghosts Again” has been remixed numerous times. Depeche Mode has started to compile them and give them an official release. In addition to streaming services, they’re also pressing the remixes onto a series of vinyl records called the “White Label Remix Series”.
The first Depeche Mode White Label record contains two “Ghosts Again” remixes on a 12″ vinyl record. They are the Massano remix and Chris Liebing vs Luke Slater remix. It’s not clear what the release schedule is, but we can expect to see more vinyl records rolling out as part of this collection soon.
One thing we do know is these records are very, very popular. They went live on the morning of October 21, and were sold out in around 15 minutes. The Depeche Mode “Ghosts Again” Remix vinyl cost $25 directly through Depeche Mode’s webstore.
After all the copies sold out, resellers began flipping the vinyl for a profit. Right now, a “Ghosts Again” vinyl is reselling for around $70. That comes out to a profit of $60 or so in under 24 hours; many of these vinyl records resold on eBay the same day they released.
