The 2022 Benito Santos Dia de Los Muertos Barbie retailed for $100 through Mattel Creations
It started flipping for a profit almost immediately after its September 2022 launch
The doll still resells for up to $850 more than three years after release
Most sold-out collectibles peak within weeks, then slide as the hype wears off and buyers move on to whatever drops next. The 2022 Benito Santos Dia de Los Muertos Barbie is an exception. Resellers who cashed out early made solid money, but the ones who held onto her are eating even better today. Three years removed from launch, a doll built around a Mexican holiday tradition is proving to be one of the stickiest collectibles in Barbie’s catalog.
Barbie’s Dia De Muertos collection has been a yearly tradition since 2019, but the 2022 release stood out for pulling in outside talent. Mattel tapped Benito Santos, a well-known Mexican fashion designer, to work alongside Barbie Signature designer Javier Meabe on the piece. The result was a black gown built around the silhouette of a charro suit, with red and white embroidery, a cropped bolero jacket, and a headpiece styled for the holiday.
The doll launched September 8, 2022, exclusively through Mattel Creations and limited to one per person for Barbie Club 59 members. It sold out fast, and the secondary market got moving almost immediately. That’s a familiar pattern for this line. The original 2019 Dia de los Muertos Barbie kicked off the tradition and still commands strong money today, while the 2023 Pink Magnolia collab flipped for around $350 out of the gate.
Three years out, the 2022 Benito Santos doll is reselling for as much as $850, a level most collectibles never touch even fresh off a drop, let alone years later. That kind of staying power separates this doll from most of the field. Compare it to 2024’s Dia de Muertos releases, which cooled off fast and settled closer to retail after a restock flooded the market.
Designer collaborations tend to hold value better than Mattel’s in-house Dia de Muertos designs, and the Benito Santos name gives this doll a crossover audience beyond typical Barbie collectors. It also helps that supply was capped hard by the one-per-person membership limit, so there was never a restock to soften demand the way there was in 2024.
Mattel has already revealed new Dia de Los Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls for 2026, and they’re expected to go on sale in September. Details are still pretty slim, but we’ll be writing up something a little more thorough as the drop date draws closer.
After watching Mattel’s Dia de Los Muertos Barbies routinely sell out every season and go on to become strong flips, we urge you to keep a close on these dolls in the fall. Sure, you might not want to keep one in your closet for a few years, but 2022’s release proves that strategy can be downright lucrative. As always, we leave those decisions up to you.
