KAWS fans got a special surprise last Thursday: a sale of books signed by the artist
$55 got you a collection of the artist’s entire work and his autograph
In under 24 hours, the signed books were reselling for $140+
If you can’t get enough of KAWS’ artwork, we might have something for you today. Earlier this week, a new paperback collection of the artist’s work went up for sale. 160 pages of a guy with Xs for eyes and 200 illustrations is sure to get collectors excited. Additionally, a limited number of signed KAWS paperbacks were available for sale. It didn’t take long at all for them to sell out, and within the day many resellers were making tons of profit by flipping these books.
The book in question is just called “KAWS”. It’s a collection of the artist’s work throughout his career, stretching from his start as a graffiti artist to details about his toy manufacturing, and an inside look at the numerous high-profile collaborations of the last few years.
Also included are several unreleased works, as well as previously unseen sketches that provide an insight into the artist’s process. It’s 160 pages, most of which are filled with color photographs of his art in a variety of settings. For a fan of the artist, or someone who likes buying KAWS figures to put on their shelf, the book is a cool thing to have.
What we’re looking at are the signed editions. At the same time the general preorder went live, a separate sale of signed KAWS books was also sold through Phaidon. A signed KAWS paperback cost $55, which was the same price as the standard edition. We don’t know exactly how many were available, but we imagine the number was pretty limited.
Getting a signature from KAWS for $50 is actually a pretty great deal. The artist isn’t known for handing out autographs, so pretty much any signed merch is notable. This was a chance to not only get his signature, but have it shipped directly to you.
Understandably, these books sold out pretty quick. The signed KAWS books went live at around 7 A.M. Pacific, and were gone by 8. Following the sale, many of these paperbacks were listed on eBay.
Before the day was even over, we saw a number of sales for more than double the book’s retail price. Right now, a signed KAWS book is reselling for around $140, nearly triple retail. For the resellers that were there for this drop, this was an opportunity to make some seriously easy profit.
KAWS signed books are expected to start shipping on September 8th. We’ll be watching the market for them to see if interest rises later in the year. It’s likely this was the only batch of signed KAWS books to be produce, so it’s entirely possible that they will appreciate in value over time. If you hadn’t noticed, KAWS is kind of a big deal, so there should be plenty of buyers in the future.
