Key Points

  • Mattel’s latest Tribute series doll is a Maria Felix Barbie

  • At $40, the dolls have repeatedly sold out at retail

  • They are reselling for $150 after Tuesday’s restock

We’re not sure how many RC readers are familiar with the life and career of María Félix. The actress was a central figure in Mexican cinema through the 40s and 50s, and was known offscreen as a champion for women and indigenous people. Naturally, that kind of pioneering spirit deserves the highest form of recognition that can be granted: being turned into a Barbie. Mattel recently rolled out a María Félix tribute Barbie doll in August, which sold out promptly after its first release. Even after a restock earlier this week, the dolls remain sold out and resell over their price at retail.

Barbie María Félix Dolls

If you didn’t know, Mexican Film Day was on August 15. For this year, Mattel had a surprise release: a María Félix Barbie. The doll is part of Mattel’s “Tribute” series, which includes other real world figures like Vera Wang and Laverne Cox.

The María Félix Barbie is based on her appearance at the height of her career. She’s wearing a unique gold dress with matching jewelry. Designer Carlyle Nuera wrote that he worked closely with Félix’s estate for the doll, sending them extensive updates during the design process for their approval. They also provided feedback for her highly detailed face sculpt.

María Félix was kind of a badass. Check out this excerpt from her Wikipedia page:

“She was also a jewelry connoisseur and had an extensive jewelry collection… In 1968, she commissioned a serpent diamond necklace from Cartier. The result was a completely articulated serpent made out of platinum and white gold and encrusted with 178.21 carats (35.642 g) of diamonds.”

This is possibly the coolest woman ever

While most dolls from the Barbie Tribute series tend to get a lukewarm reception, this one has proven extremely popular. Whether it’s her distinct face and appearance, the intriguing life that María Félix led, or her extremely pimp jewelry collection, there’s something about the María Félix Barbie that’s clicking with collectors. Since these went live on August 15, they’ve been consistently sold out.

The María Félix Barbie recently restocked on August 22 through Target and Walmart. Dolls were in stock for a few hours this time, before selling out yet again. Tribute series Barbies are not produced in highly limited numbers, so for a product to sell out like this is notable.

María Félix Barbie Price and Availability

If you’re in the market for one of these, you’ll need to wait for the next restock. The María Félix Barbie costs $40, and is available through Mattel’s site, Target, and other doll retailers. Since this is a Tribute series doll, no special membership or subscription is required to buy one.

Like we said, the dolls restocked earlier this week. Considering how popular these are proving, we can expect to see more hitting retailers’ sites soon. Of course, if patience isn’t one of your virtues, you can always pick one up off a reseller. Speaking of which…

Barbie María Félix Dolls Resell

Resellers who got in early on this doll’s release were positioned to make some easy money. Collectors seem pretty desperate for it, and are willing to pay well over retail to get their hands on one. Right now, a María Félix Barbie is reselling for around $150, with many sales above that figure as well.

This is actually lower compared to last week. Tuesday’s restock caused prices to drop a bit as more dolls entered the market. Before that, they were regularly reselling for upwards of $200. Still, for them to remain sold out and reselling following a restock is a great sign.

Keep your eyes out for more restocks of the María Félix Barbie. Clearly there’s something about this doll that’s attracting collectors, and resellers are taking note.
