Do you know what a Honey Deuce is? While it might sound like an Urban Dictionary entry, the Honey Deuce is actually a mixed drink invented for and served at the U.S. Open. The drink has gotten a remarkable amount of attention online recently, and Open attendees have started rooting through the stadium’s trash cans to collect the distinctive discarded cups. These are reselling right now as unofficial souvenirs for the tournament.

The US Open, Grey Goose, and the Honey Deuce

Summer’s almost done, and the U.S. Open is in full swing. While tennis might not be the most popular American pastime, drinking sure as hell is. What we’re looking at today is a combination of both.

The Honey Deuce is the signature cocktail served at the U.S. Open. It’s made from a simple blend of Grey Goose, lemonade, and a little raspberry liqueur. The drink’s distinctive garnish is a toothpicked skewer of honeydew melon balls, made to look like tennis balls.

It’s been a staple at the tournament for years now, but picked up a ton of attention this year. You might have already seen some of the viral posts, like this inexplicably awkward moment captured live for the world to see.

Whether this is some sort of one-percenter menage-a-trois, or simple seat mixup, we don’t know. It’s funny to watch though. And of course, the Honey Deuce is front and center during the scene.

In any case, fans at home have been eager to make the drink. While you can get all the ingredients from a quick swing to the liquor store, there’s something important missing.

Yes, the cups. Sometimes, it’s not about the drink, but what you serve it in. What’s a Moscow Mule without a copper mug? A margarita without the salted rim? Coors Light served warm in anything other than a red Solo cup?

U.S. Open attendees have been collecting Honey Deuce plastic cups however they can. Bartering with other fans, snatching unattended drinks, or just raiding trash cans when security isn’t looking.

At $23 for a single drink, we’re hoping most of these cups were scavenged and not bought from concessions. And while it seems impossible, some attendees might actually be making a profit from this year’s U.S. Open.

You know what they say about one man’s trash. After each day, we’ve seen a ton of listings for Honey Deuce plastic tumblers appear on eBay. Even without the booze, these are profitable.

Right now, U.S. Open Honey Deuce plastic cups are reselling for $10 to $20 at a time. While that might seem modest, keep in mind that some fans are walking out of the stadium with 30 to 50 at a time. That’s a lot of cash, once you pick the ants and bits of trash out.

Oh, don’t make that face. There’s nothing gross about used, sticky, plastic cups pulled out of a dumpster and sold online. Especially if those cups are lining the pockets of hardworking, tennis-loving resellers.

And that’s pretty much the whole story. On the off chance you have tickets for an upcoming day at the U.S. Open, make sure you keep an eye out for any extra Honey Deuce cups. Try not to get kicked out if you go dumpster diving.
