The Rolling Stones’ upcoming album Foreign Tongues isn’t out until July 10, but the band has already found a new partner to help move it off the shelves. This week, the Stones announced a collaboration with Marvel, releasing five limited-edition vinyl variants that swap out the standard album artwork for Marvel-illustrated covers, each bundled with an exclusive tie-in comic. At $70 a pop, these sit at a premium, but the comic book component makes them something a little different from the steady stream of Foreign Tongues variants that have been accumulating since spring.

The five editions are available now through The Rolling Stones official store, each priced at $69.98. Every pressing features a different Marvel character rendered by Marvel illustrators specifically for this release.

The heroes featured are The Hulk, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Thor, and Captain America. Each gets a unique comic book-inspired cover, along with a unique comic book.

Those comic books are the main draw to this collection, as it means collectors who want all five need five separate purchases. The records ship on July 10, the same day as the standard album release. Orders can be canceled for a full refund before that date, which does reduce the risk somewhat for buyers who are on the fence.

Foreign Tongues Vinyl Variants

This release is just the latest expansion of the Stones’ aggressive campaign to sell Foreign Tongues in as many formats as possible. Last week they announced an exclusive collaboration with FIFA for three limited edition World Cup-inspired variants. Combined with this Marvel release, Foreign Tongues already has eight different variants available for sale a month before the album’s release. Take that, Taylor Swift.

Before that, they released an extremely limited number of 12″ singles featuring the song “Rough & Twisted” before the album was officially revealed. Not only that, but these singles were credited to “The Cockroaches”, not the Rolling Stones. You can read more about that release here.

The upshot was that resellers and collectors that connected the dots and secured a record before they sold out were able to flip them for over $1,000.

Our take? The Stones are hellbent on getting eyes on this release and milking it for every cent. These Marvel variants and the FIFA collab that preceded them are examples of this. We’re expecting more limited edition releases slated prior to the album’s release, and we’re hoping that at least one of them will be similar to the scavenger hunt for “Rough & Twisted” vinyl.

Bottom Line

Resellers should go in with measured expectations. The Marvel brand name carries real weight, and the comics add a collectibility angle that could attract buyers outside the typical vinyl audience. But five variants at $70 each is a lot of supply entering the market simultaneously, and the Foreign Tongues variant landscape is getting crowded. If one character proves more popular than the others (Wolverine and Spider-Man are historically the heaviest hitters in Marvel collectibles), that specific pressing may outperform the rest.
