Folio Society's Moby Dick Limited Edition Books Drop June 16

The Folio Society Moby-Dick limited edition is a full-leather bound collector’s edition of Herman Melville’s 1851 novel, housed in a clamshell box and limited to 750 numbered copies worldwide. The binding is blocked full-grain cowhide leather with an inset leather whale label, gun-metal foiled page edges, and textured endpapers.

Inside, Mu Pan contributes 10 full-page color illustrations, including three double-page spreads and a three-page fold-out whale identification chart.

Mu Pan is a Chinese-American artist whose work blends martial-arts cinema, Hong Kong comics, and Chinese literary tradition into something that reads as contemporary and visceral rather than traditional or decorative. He previously illustrated Folio’s edition of the classic novel Monkey, and his style is a strong match for Melville’s violent, obsessive prose. The limitation label is letterpress printed and signed by both Pan and introducer Michael Dirda, a Pulitzer Prize-winning literary critic and longtime Folio collaborator.

The book itself runs 664 pages, typeset in Goudy Old Style, and measures a substantial 11.5 by 8 inches. It is not a subtle shelf presence.

Let’s be direct: this is a long, patient hold with no guaranteed return, and it is not for most resellers.

That said, Folio Society limited editions have a documented history of appreciating over time. Their limited edition of the Homeric Epics, which retailed for $1,000 at release in August 2025 in an edition of 500, sold on eBay this month for $2,000. The Philip K. Dick Complete Short Stories limited edition, which retailed for $740 in 2021, now resells for around $2,000. Very solid numbers, but remember these took years to appreciate.

The Moby-Dick edition has some things working in its favor. The run of 750 copies is small. The title is one of the most recognized novels in the American canon, voted the Great American Novel by Folio Society readers. The release is timed to the U.S. 250th anniversary, which gives it a cultural hook. And the production quality is genuinely impressive by any standard.

What doesn’t work in your favor: $750 is a significant capital commitment to tie up for a year or more. Returns and refunds will only be accepted within 4 weeks of delivery, well before these will have an opportunity to appreciate. Folio Society limited editions typically do not crater below retail, and most trade at or slightly under if the market softens, but there is no floor guarantee. Demand depends heavily on whether collectors outside the secondary market care, and that is harder to predict for literary collectibles than for, say, limited sneakers or trading cards.

If you are a book collector who would be happy owning this regardless of resale outcome, the calculus is different. As a pure resell play, make sure you understand the risks and go in with your eyes open and plenty of discretion. This is not a sure flip, and it’s definitely not a quick flip.
