Mattel released a pair of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Monster High dolls yesterday
They sold for $80 and were gone in 15 minutes
Now these dolls are reselling for $170+
There’s only a few days left until Halloween, which means companies are really ramping up their efforts to get you to spend money. Costumes, candy, decorations and now dolls. Yesterday, Mattel released a special set of two dolls based on “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. After selling out in minutes, the dolls are now circulating on eBay at a hefty premium. Here’s how resellers made an easy buck off these Monster High dolls.
Well, it’s almost time to get spooky. We talk about Halloween a lot on this blog, but that’s only because it’s so lucrative. That, and it’s also the best holiday.
Anyways, if you’ve read our articles on Home Depot’s Jack Skellington yard decorations and The Nightmare Before Christmas Starbucks tumblers, you’d know that Tim Burton’s 1993 film “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is exceptionally popular this time of year (despite it really being more of a Christmas movie).
Naturally that means a ton of money for companies that are able to cash in on the IP. Now it’s Mattel’s turn.
Yesterday, there was a limited sale of Monster High Skullector series dolls based on “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The dolls were sold together, and are a 12 inch tall Jack Skellington doll and 10.5 inch tall Sally.
These are pretty high quality dolls, and have been recreated from their appearance in the movie almost exactly. Aside from the dolls, two stands are also included.
The packaging also worth paying attention to. Many Skullector series doll have specially decorated boxes, and this one is no exception. The package for these dolls is made to look like the cemetery from a scene in the movie.
Monster High Skullector dolls are their premium collection intended for serious fans of the brand (skull + collector). They draw from a wide range of sources, from real life figures to fictional characters.
What they have in common is they’re all spooky, and they’re all high quality. Most Skullector dolls sell for somewhere between $50 and $100.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” Monster High dolls sold for $80 directly through Mattel’s website. They were released at 12 P.M. Pacific, and sold out in under 15 minutes.
A Fang Club membership was not required to purchase these dolls, unlike other Monster High Skullector dolls. That’s a bit surprising considering how (obviously) popular these were going to be, but it ended up being an advantage for resellers.
Speaking of which, it’s time for the fun part. We know Monster High dolls resell. We know Skullector dolls resell. And we know “The Nightmare Before Christmas” resells no matter what the product is.
Skullector series dolls are always a limited production, and while they might restock in the future, it typically takes a long time. In other words, perfect for resellers.
Add in the demand and the dedicated fanbase and you have an absolute treat for resellers. Like we said, these dolls sold out in minutes, and many people on the Monster High Instagram page would immediately complain about missing out on them.
Fortunately there are plenty of friendly resellers out there that can get the dolls they want to them. Right now, the Monster High “The Nightmare Before Christmas” dolls are reselling for upwards of $175, with many sales over $200.
We expect these dolls to stay high and continue to do well through the rest of the year. Even though Halloween is almost here, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a year-round phenomenon. People love the movie enough to buy pretty much anything related to it, and these dolls are no different.
If you managed to snag one, stay firm on your price. It’s been less than 24 hours and we’ve already seen a ton of sales roll in. We expect these be an easy $100 in profit.
As always, subscribe to our newsletter to learn more about reselling. There’s always another flip around the corner, and we’ll be covering them for you.
