Key Points

  • McDonald’s gave away 750 caviar kits for free on February 10th valued at roughly $120

  • The site crash within minutes and sold out before most people finished loading the page

  • Now the kits are flipping for up $300+, nearly triple their actual value

McDonald’s dropped 750 free caviar kits on Valentine’s Day, and the internet completely lost its mind. The kits disappeared in under three minutes, the website crashed, and within hours, resellers were flipping order confirmations on eBay for multiples of what the contents are actually worth. It’s a genuinely weird outcome for a free giveaway tied to chicken nuggets and fish eggs.

McDonald's Caviar Explained

When we covered this drop ahead of time, we pegged the total kit value at roughly $120. That math held up: a 1oz tin of Paramount Baerii Sturgeon caviar (normally $85-$95 per ounce), a $25 Arch Card, crème fraîche, and a mother of pearl serving spoon. It’s real, legitimate caviar from a supplier that stocks Michelin-starred restaurants, not some promotional knockoff.

McDonald’s partnered with Paramount Caviar specifically to give this credibility, and it worked. The “McNuggets meet caviar” pairing had already gone viral after appearing at the US Open through COQODAQ, and after Rihanna posted herself eating the combo on Instagram. McDonald’s was tapping into a trend that already had momentum.

The kits went live at 11am ET on February 10th at McNuggetCaviar.com. The site crashed almost immediately. By 11:15am, it was back up with a sold-out message. McDonald’s confirmed the kits were gone but declined to share the exact quantity. Newsweek later confirmed 750 kits were made available total, which is an absurdly small number for a nationally promoted drop.

By that afternoon, listings were already live on eBay. Some sellers listed order confirmations, photos of confirmation emails, even printed screenshots of confirmation pages. Buyers purchased them anyway.

McDonald's Caviar Kits Resell

Confirmed sold listings on eBay are clustering in the $300 to $400 range. There are asking prices as high as $600 and some hopeful sellers at $5,000, but those aren’t moving. Realistically, the market is settling around $300 to $350 for an actual kit, which is roughly two and a half to three times the $120 approximate face value.

McDonalds Caviar listed for sale on eBay

That’s a surprising result. The kit has no real scarcity narrative beyond “McDonald’s only made 750 of them,” no celebrity co-sign beyond the general trend association, and no collectible component. The caviar itself has a shelf life. What’s driving prices is pure hype and the novelty factor of owning a McDonald’s-branded luxury item. It’s the same energy as the Hamburglar collectibles or the Travis Scott meal merch, just with a much shorter expiration date (literally).

Bottom Line

If you copped a kit, selling now is the right call. The $300 to $350 range is likely the peak. Caviar doesn’t age well, and once the Valentine’s Day news cycle fully fades, demand will too. There’s no long-term collector market for fish eggs in a McDonald’s box.

For everyone who missed it, this one stings a little, but the margins weren’t predictable in advance. We valued the kit at $120 and called it a solid free flip. Nobody expected it to hit $300. File this one under “sometimes the market surprises you.”
