Pre-orders launch January 29 at 7 AM PT through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers for $85
Limited quantities with Marathon-inspired design featuring bold graphics and fractured shapes in the game’s color scheme
Marathon’s art style and proven popularity make this a very attractive flip
Sony has revealed a limited edition DualSense controller for Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming PvPvE shooter. Preorders open January 29 through PlayStation Direct. If you’ve been watching limited edition PlayStation controllers, you know the pattern here. Limited edition DualSense controllers have proven to be one of the most consistent flip opportunities in gaming hardware, so don’t skip this one.
Bungie has a dedicated fanbase from Halo and Destiny. Marathon is their first new IP in over a decade, which automatically creates collector interest. The branded controller launches two months before the game (March 5), meaning early demand comes from both Bungie fans and general PlayStation collectors who flip controllers regardless of game quality.
Sony confirmed these are “limited quantities globally,” which historically means sold out within hours at most retailers. PlayStation Direct typically sells out in minutes for popular limited editions. The design collaboration with Bungie’s art team resulted in a controller that stands out on display shelves, another factor that drives long-term collector value.
DualSense limited editions don’t care about the game’s success. The Concord controller launched for a game that shut down after 14 days, making it one of gaming’s biggest flops. Those controllers still sell for $100-120 on eBay, well above the $85 retail. The Astro Bot controller that dropped in 2024 sold out immediately and currently moves for $150-170. The 30th Anniversary edition hit $200+ within weeks of release.
The pattern is clear: limited quantity plus unique design equals profit, regardless of the game attached. Marathon’s industrial aesthetic with vibrant color accents makes this controller visually distinct from standard DualSense options, which drives collector demand.
Preorders go live January 29 at 7 AM Pacific through PlayStation Direct. It’s not clear if other retailers will open preorders at the same time, or if that will remain a PlayStation Direct exclusive. Preorders outside the US will open at 10 AM local time.
Immediate flip potential sits around $120-150 based on recent limited edition performance. The Astro Bot controller hit $200 in the first week before settling around $120-140. The Concord controller proved even flops maintain value, currently at $100-120. Marathon has better odds than Concord simply because Bungie has an established fanbase and the game isn’t launching as a PlayStation exclusive experiment.
Longer-term holds could appreciate if Marathon becomes popular, but the safer play is flipping within the first month when FOMO is highest. Controllers tend to peak in the first 2-4 weeks, then stabilize at a lower but still profitable level.
Keep in mind Sony’s return policies vary by retailer. PlayStation Direct typically allows returns within 30 days, reducing your risk if the market doesn’t materialize.
Marathon itself launches March 5, two months after controller pre-orders. If the game gets positive reception, controller values could spike. If it flops like Concord, you’re still looking at modest profit based on collector demand for limited editions. Either way, the risk is relatively low compared to most gaming hardware flips.
Check PlayStation Direct queue systems the morning of January 29. Sony often implements random queues for high-demand items. Being online at exactly 7am PT doesn’t guarantee first access, but it ensures you’re in the pool. Have payment methods saved and shipping addresses confirmed to speed through checkout.
Multiple controllers per order limits will likely apply. Most retailers cap at 2-4 units for limited editions. If you’re going for volume, hit multiple retailers simultaneously.
The track record says limited edition DualSense controllers flip. Marathon’s playerbase and distinct design make this a solid opportunity for resellers who can secure pre-orders on launch day.
