Key Points

  • Fifteen different collectibles were dropped for Dookie Demastered

  • They were extremely limited and sold via lottery for $20 to $100

  • Resellers have flipped some of them for over $1,000

Last week, the pop-punk rockers Green Day partnered with LA-based art collective Brain for a new take on their 1994 album “Dookie”. Rather than a super premium collector’s variant, “Dookie Demastered” featured a host of different lo-fi media sold via lotteries. The move was extremely well-received by Green Day fans, and the limited number of items from the Dookie Demastered collection are now reselling for up to twenty times what Brain charged.

It’s time to turn back the clock. Thirty years ago, Green Day released their third album, “Dookie”. Featuring hits like “Basket Case”, “She”, and “When I Come Around”, the album was Green Day’s first release after signing with Reprise, and marked a new chapter in their career.

And while some of their more hardcore fans saw it as a sellout, Green Day would gain a whole new level of popularity following the release of “Dookie”. It’s now regarded as one of their best albums, and a quintessential piece of pop-punk history.

To celebrate, they’ve created a special 30th anniversary edition of “Dookie”. Rather than the traditional box set, signed vinyl, overpriced crate of crap most bands put out, they’ve partnered with art collective Brain for an irreverent and novel take on their classic.

Dookie Demastered is a 15 part collection. Each song from “Dookie” has been packaged in a different form of lo-fi media, then raffled in extremely low numbers. You can check out all the songs on Brain’s website, which include a wax cylinder recording, a HitClip, and a custom Big Mouth Billy Bass.

Many of the chosen media were common fixtures during the 90s, and Dookie Demastered is as much a celebration of the decade as the album.

Make no mistake, they sound like shit. Brain has leaned into this, with much of the promotional art featuring highly compressed, blurry artwork.

And by all accounts, the collection has been enormously popular with fans. Brain has previously collaborated with major bands like Fall Out Boy, but their Dookie Demastered announcement on Instagram picked up tens of thousands of favorites and plenty of supportive comments.

Brain released each song from Dookie Demastered as an individual raffle. Production numbers are inexact, but most songs were only available in double or even single digit quantities. Prices ranged from $20 to $100.

Dookie Demastered Resells on eBay

The Dookie Demastered collection dropped through a dedicated website on October 9. Fans were able to enter individual raffles for each item, and the odds of winning anything were quite long. Resellers jumped on the drop at the same time, but it seems like this might have been off the radar for many.

Obviously, everything sold out quickly. With how many eyes were on this drop, Brain likely had tens of thousands of people competing over 150, maybe 200 items at most.

And following the drop, we have seen a handful of confirmed eBay sales for items from the Dookie Demastered collection. These are reselling for just about $1,000, but obviously a pretty small sample.

Aside from these, at least two more sellers are attempting to flip their Dookie Demastered items. Interestingly, out of these four items, three of them are the Dookie Demastered “Having a Blast” Floppy Disks.

It’s possible that these were produced in greater numbers than the other items, but chances are this is just weird luck.

Overall, you can look at the Dookie Demastered collection as nothing more than a lottery ticket. With the amount of competition and multiple raffles held, luck was the deciding factor for both fans and resellers. Still, $1,000 for something that costs you $20 is always worth taking a chance on.
